Welcome to Lands Between
Elden Ring is FromSoftware's massive open-world action RPG, co-created with George R.R. Martin. It combines punishing combat of Souls series with a vast, explorable world filled with dungeons, bosses, and secrets. If you're new to FromSoftware games, open-world structure actually makes this most accessible entry point — you can always ride away from a tough fight and come back stronger. This guide will help you get started without painful trial-and-error that usually comes with a Souls game.
Choosing Your Starting Class
Your starting class determines your initial stats and equipment, but doesn't lock you into anything permanently. Every class can eventually use any weapon or spell. For beginners, Vagabond is safest choice — high Vigor (health) and Strength, with a sword and shield that can block most early attacks. Samurai is excellent for players who prefer faster combat, starting with Uchigatana (one of Terbaik weapons in entire game) and a longbow. Astrologer is go-to for magic users, starting with a staff and Glintstone Pebble spell that trivializes many early encounters. Avoid Wretch unless you specifically want challenge of starting with nothing. Your Keepsake (starting gift) should be Golden Seed — it gives you an extra healing flask charge immediately, which is incredibly valuable early on.
Most Important Stat: Vigor
single biggest mistake new players make is not leveling Vigor. In Elden Ring, Vigor directly determines your maximum HP, and scaling is extremely generous up to 40 points. As a general rule, keep Vigor at roughly your character level until it hits 40. A character with 15 Vigor will get one-shot by most mid-game bosses regardless of their armor. A character with 40 Vigor can survive multiple hits and actually learn boss patterns. After 40 Vigor, start investing in your damage stat (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Faith depending on your build). Endurance to 20-25 is also worthwhile for equip load and stamina.
Exploring Dunia Terbuka
Lands Between is enormous, and game gives you almost no direction. After tutorial cave, you'll emerge into Limgrave — this is your starting region and where you should spend your first 10-20 hours. Key early priorities: ride south to Church of Elleh to meet Merchant Kalé and buy a crafting kit. Visit Gatefront Ruins ( camp with soldiers north of church) to trigger a cutscene with Melina who gives you Torrent, your horse, and ability to level up. Avoid Stormveil Castle until you're at least level 25-30. Instead, explore Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula to south — there are dozens of mini-dungeons, caves, and catacombs with useful loot and manageable bosses.
Combat Fundamentals
Elden Ring combat rewards patience. Learn to dodge-roll (you have invincibility frames during roll animation), time your attacks between enemy combos, and never get greedy with extra hits. Stamina management is critical — if your stamina bar empties, you can't dodge, block, or attack. Shield blocking is excellent for learning enemy patterns but drains stamina rapidly against heavy hitters. Two-handing your weapon (press two-hand button) gives you 50% more Strength for meeting weapon requirements and deals more poise damage. Spirit Ashes (summons) are a game-changer for solo players — Lone Wolf Ashes from Church of Elleh and later Mimic Tear can turn impossible fights into manageable ones. Use them without guilt; they're a core game mechanic.
Upgrade Your Weapons Early
Weapon upgrades provide far more damage than leveling stats. Smithing Stones are found throughout world, and Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearings (found in specific tunnels) let you buy infinite stones from Twin Maiden Husks at Roundtable Hold. A +6 weapon with base stats will outdamage a +0 weapon with 40 points in its scaling stat. Prioritize finding Smithing Stones in glowing mine tunnels marked on your map. Your weapon's Ash of War (weapon skill) can also be swapped — experiment with different skills at a Site of Grace. default Ash of War options like Bloody Slash and Square Off are extremely powerful early on.
Tips for Southeast Asian Players
SEA players connecting to Asia server generally experience 30-80ms ping, which is perfectly playable for PvE. For co-op and PvP, game uses P2P connections, so playing with friends in same region helps. game frequently goes on sale on Steam during regional promotions — check SteamDB for historical lowest prices. Shadow of Erdtree DLC is a significant difficulty spike even for experienced players, so complete base game first. Online communities on Reddit (r/EldenRing), Facebook groups, and local Discord servers are great for finding co-op partners and build advice.
Common Beginner Mistakes
Don't hoard runes. If you have enough to level up, go level up. Runes on your character are runes you can lose. Don't ignore crafting. Crafted items like Firebombs, Poison Curing Boluses, and Warming Stones are genuinely useful. Don't fight everything. Running past enemies to reach a Site of Grace or a specific item is a legitimate strategy. Don't compare yourself to "git gud" culture. Use summons, use magic, use whatever makes game fun for you. FromSoftware designed these tools to be used. Don't sell weapons and armor. You might need them later for a different build, and rune value from selling is negligible.
