The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Starts Digital Rollout, But Malaysia May Need To Wait

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is starting its home release journey, but for now, Malaysian fans should treat this as a US-first rollout rather than a full global launch.

After becoming the biggest box office hit of 2026 back in April, the Mario sequel has now begun appearing on digital platforms in the United States. The 4K UHD digital version is available on selected storefronts including Amazon, Fandango and Apple TV.

Pricing is very premium, as expected for a fresh blockbuster home release. US viewers can buy the digital version for US$29.99, or rent it for 48 hours at US$24.99. Converted roughly, that puts it in the ballpark of around RM140 for purchase and RM118 for rental before any platform differences, taxes or exchange rate changes. In other words: not exactly cheap for Malaysian viewers if direct access ever appears at similar pricing.

For now, there is no confirmed Malaysia or wider SEA digital availability mentioned. That matters because Nintendo and movie-related rollouts can be very uneven across this region. Sometimes Apple TV Malaysia gets titles fairly quickly, sometimes we wait. Fandango is also not really relevant for local users, while Amazon availability depends heavily on region and account setup.

Still, this is good news if you missed the cinema run or want to rewatch it at home with the family. The Galaxy setting is basically made for big, colourful screens, and a 4K UHD version should suit the movie’s brighter space visuals nicely. For Malaysian Nintendo fans, especially the crowd that grew up on Wii-era Super Mario Galaxy, this is probably one of those releases worth keeping an eye on once local storefronts update.

The digital version also comes with more than an hour of extra material. According to the report, the bonus content includes behind-the-scenes footage covering the making of the movie, the cast of characters, the film’s major locations, and a segment digging into the “secrets of the galaxy”. That is the kind of extra content physical collectors usually care about, so it is nice to see it included with the digital release too.

That said, if you are the type who still buys discs, there is another option coming soon. The 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray physical editions are scheduled for 16 June 2026. For SEA collectors, that may actually be the more interesting date, especially if import listings pop up through local game shops, Shopee, Lazada or specialist Blu-ray sellers.

The big question for Malaysia is simple: buy early digitally if it lands here, or wait for the physical edition? At US pricing, the rental feels quite steep unless you really need to watch it immediately. If local pricing is more reasonable, then sure, it becomes a fun weekend family watch. Otherwise, collectors may want to hold out for the 4K UHD or Blu-ray release next month.

Either way, the digital rollout has officially started. Now we wait to see when Mario’s latest space adventure actually reaches Malaysian screens at home.
