NECPC LAVIE MINI Prototype - PC's answer to the Switch?

Posted by George Wong on January 13, 2021

If you want to game on the go currently, you're limited to a handful of modern platforms - we've got our smartphones (everyone has one) or a console like the Nintendo Switch. What if you wanted to play PC games without lugging around a large laptop? That's where the mini-computer comes in. While not thoroughly explored, there have been a handful of gadgets in the space, most notably the GPD Pocket. Well, if things go well, we'll see another player in the space from NECPC (the joint venture of Lenovo and NEC Corporation).

The company today unveiled a prototype of the LAVIE MINI, an ultra-mobile PC with regular laptop specs - 11th gen Intel Core i7 processor with Intel Iris Xe graphics, an 8" WUXGA (1920 x 1200) touch display, and only weighing 579g. What we found interesting about the device is the detachable gaming controller which transform it into a form factor that we all know and enjoy! If this is the future of PC gaming on the go, sign me up. It will also come with a Switch-style dock for you to game on a big screen and attach additional accessories (i.e. external keyboard/mouse, or other gamepads).

No word on when it'll be released or pricing (probably not anytime soon since it's only a prototype), but we can't wait to see it on shelves!
