MPL Indonesia: A snapshot of the Indonesian meta in Alter Ego vs Genflix Aerowolf

Despite losing the series, Alter Ego’s Game 1 performance was a helpful glimpse into the meta.

Meta Matters is a series where we take a deeper look into the esports metagame. We’ll explore strategies used by the best teams and supplement that with our own research and statistics. Esports isn’t just a random group of people playing video games – the meta truly matters!

Alter Ego vs Genflix Aerowolf was a highlighted match on Week 7, Day 2 of MPL-ID Season 5.

Welcome to a breakdown in the middle of Malaysia’s Movement Control Order. It’s not the best of situations but it gives an analyst more time to focus on MPL Indonesia Season 5. This week, we will be looking into the match between Alter Ego (AE) vs Genflix Aerowolf (GA), especially in Game 1.

The latest patch 1.4.6 brought much needed nerfs and adjustments just before MPL-ID week 7. If you haven’t read about it yet, the most notable changes are to Twilight Armor & Flameshot, visual fixes for certain heroes. In terms of heroes, Freya and Hanzo were revamped, while most mages received very small game limiters, and finally, hyper carries Bruno and Granger receive a bit of a nerf.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s look at the game. Right off the bat, the draft was strange. Alter Ego on Blue (first pick) and Genflix Aerowolf were on Red (second pick). Here are the bans and picks:

From the bans alone, hyper carries were being targeted except Bruno and Granger. It seems that their recent nerfs have caused both teams to regard them as be less reliable. Now the draft gets a little weirder in Aerowolf’s third pick (red 3). After seeing the core combo from Alter Ego’s open hand drafting style, GA immediately realized that they needed to secure a stronger crowd control hero for their line-up.

They picked Akai, and AE responded by removing Cecilion as GA lacked magic damage. With so much disengage already on GA’s side, Cecilion would be able to survive harshest of teamfights. Harith was an option, but he depended on his dash too much - not to mention Esmeralda’s shield steal’s function meant that Harith would be rendered even weaker. Lunox, on the other hand, is mostly a single-target mage after the Power of Chaos: Darkening effect wears off.

However, for Genflix’s last pick, I usually disagree with Irithel, but with no other Marksman option to complement the team, Irithel’ s mass slow was a perfect fit for Genflix Aerowolf’s disengage-hyper-carry composition versus Alter Ego’s hard-engage line-up.

At the start of the game, both teams opted for a 5-mask opening in hopes of leveling up faster. Hitting level 2 at 1 minute is an enormous advantage. In this game, AE attempted to steal Genflix’s blue buff close to the 1st minute mark and it was a great move. They claimed first blood but failed to steal the buff.

Alter Ego's 1st minute blue buff invade.

The game was close even until Alter Ego’s Celiboy was ambushed by three members of Genflix near the topside river during the 3rd minute. However, His Esmeralda was too durable and Genflix just could not take her down. This resulted in a small skirmish in the mid river with AE coming out slightly on top.

From here, AE controlled the map despite many attempts by Fredo’s Akai to catch them. His ganks often failed thanks to Purify being a decent spell to walk away from dangerous situations like this (Celiboy’s Esmeralda and Maungzy’s Roger both used this spell).

This game is a good reflection of the shift in meta because the new patch has severely hit the previous meta’s spells (Flameshot) and picks (Granger and Bruno). I would give it more time to let the meta develop but I do love the attempt to expand the Marksman hyper carry hero pool and teamfight compositions.

I believe that the 3 Flameshot compositions is now shaky as more teams are trying to innovate towards making hyper carries work in this environment because the buffs have largely remained the same.
