The first ever Malaysia Esports Championship (MEC 2020/2021) saw a series of hard-hitting finals that ran its course last weekend (29 - 31 January), where Malaysian players battled it out in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, PUBG Mobile, Dota 2 and FIFA 21 for their share of the RM100,000 prize pool, as well entry spots to the qualifiers of the MLBB Professional League Malaysia/Singapore (MPL-MY/SG Season 7) and the PUBG Mobile Malaysia National Championship (PMNC 2021).

Ezzy Esports emerged as champions for the MLBB leg of MEC 2020/2021, followed by Academy Esports as the runner-ups. As the top 2 teams, they qualify for the MPL-MY/SG Season 7 qualifiers. On the mobile battle royale side, TheFarang Lejund persevered to be the PUBG Mobile winners, therefore securing a spot as the first team to qualify for the upcoming PMNC 2021. Both champions were rewarded RM18,000 and RM15,000, respectively.

For the console and PC esports sphere, xFlashzz-10 reigned supreme as the FIFA 21 champion in MEC, and ICECREAM 2022 were the Dota 2 victors after vanquishing DHFANTASZE in the Finals. As a result, the two won RM5,000 in winnings.

MEC 2020/2021 began on 21 December, and was broken down into three stages: the qualifiers, Playoffs and the Grand Finals. The Malaysian tournament saw more than 11,370 registrations across different categories, a pretty dramatic surge from the initial numbers, which we reported was 7,424 participants on 8 January. A total of 1.6 million viewers witnessed the series on Esports Integrated’s (ESI) Facebook page and Twitch channel.

MEC 2020/2021 was organised by ESI, an initiative launched by Impact Integrated, under the purview of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KSB), alongside Geek Fam and Alhamra Games.

MEC 2020/2021 is one of several key pillars to push the National Esports Roadmap forward and foster an inclusive inclusive environment for local gamers via ESI’s ceaseless partnership with the local government.
