A PUBG Mobile supergroup of this calibre, comprising the best of Team No Recoil and AKA Esports, surely would have some special training to get them this far. In reality, Team Whales simply emphasise on the “work hard play hard” lifestyle to help them prepare for the competitive scene, including the ongoing PUBG Mobile Professional League Malaysia/Singapore (PMPL MY/SG) Season 3.

“We train so much on weekdays that we’re exhausted by the end of the day,” said Stewart9k, thus wanting to make full use of their free time to R&R. Devouring barbequed meals, shopping and playing other video games (like Genshin Impact, Minecraft, CS:GO and Valorant) might seem counterproductive, but it’s essential to gather their energy and be better prepared for the tournament. Plus, “we want to enjoy our lives too.”
Prior to being sponsored by local esports organisation Whales Esports, both teams saw the departure of several members that prompted them to have tryouts for new players. Coincidentally, one of their candidates introduced them to Whales Esports, who were looking to sign a professional PUBG Mobile squad.
“Since both of us lacked players, we decided to merge together and form this super team,” manager Jack explained, adding that all of them are a group of friends.
Looks like Whales Esports’ decision has paid off, with Team Whales qualifying for the Country Finals of PMPL MY/SG Season 3. “We were playing the same meta as a super aggressive group in the last two seasons, so we decided to make some improvements this time,” InSomnus shared, saying that they've been more tactical.
Stewart9k elaborated, “The circle is slower nowadays, so we’ll take the time to discuss together what to do and play defensively.” Even so, InSomnus said that “we’ll still pair it with our signature playstyle.”
The former AKA Esports members, Looyou and Snap, feel that their current lineup is definitely stronger than their previous roster. “We play ferociously, like crazy dogs (疯狗),” Looyou - who played for Team No Recoil in Season 1 - said with a chuckle. “We have a lot of experienced players in the team, so I think we stand a chance of winning the championship,” to which Snap agrees. “I feel more comfortable playing with them because they know what to do in any situation we’re in.”
While other veteran teams like Yoodo Gank and Damansara Flash Vision have their own coaches, Team Whales have yet to acquire one of their own, though with valid reasons. “We find it difficult to get a suitable coach because most of them don’t speak Chinese (which the team converse in),” Jack revealed, saying that most of them have also been picked up by other teams.
Not that they’re in urgent need of one anyway, and Team Whales are hungrier than ever for the championship podium this season. And if there’s one team they’re eyeing to wallop, it’s Geek Fam. “They always backstab us during scrims, so we’re furious (friendly, of course),” said Looyou.
And where better place to put those anger to good use than the PMPL MY/SG Season 3?

Of course, Team Whales didn't just run and gun every team they stumble upon. It's a mix between tactical and skilful CQC (close-quarters combat) gameplay that scored them this many kills, and thanks to Team Whales' scouter, Sean "InSomnus" Tee Yau Terng, we have a glimpse behind how an aggressive team like Team Whales rotate to secure their kills.
"Gathering information is most important when doing rotations (moving from one place to another)," said Insomnus. He explained that as an aggressive team wanting to rake in kills, they will look at the killboard (to keep track of which players or teams have been eliminated) to find out which team has fewer members or in the middle of a gunfight, so they can decide whether to push for kills or not while rotating. "If they're having an intense fight, we can probably third-party (ambush) them and clean them out. And if the team has fewer players, we can choose to push them while entering the safe zone."
Since information is vital to the team's success, it would also be wise to know who Team Whales will be up against when attacking. But, knowing that they don't see the same way the audience do in the livestream, how exactly will they know who they're battling?
"Drop spots for every team are pretty much the same," InSomnus elaborated, adding that every team has this knowledge from participating in scrims. However, if the plane's flight path deviates far from their favourite looting area, some teams may change their usual spots and opt for somewhere closer or safer. Nevertheless, based on this intel, Team Whales will figure out where nearby teams are and deduce who's fighting who before they make their move.

Two seasoned Malaysian PUBG Mobile squads, Team No Recoil (PMPL MY/SG Season 2 finalists) and AKA Esports have come together to form a new super roster that would combine the best of both worlds. And what's a new team without a new name? Thus, the duo merged to become Team Whales, after signing with local esports organisation Whales Esports late last year.

"Whales Esports believe that by signing Team No Recoil (after merging), it will be helpful for both sides to expand the local market and let more people know about us," said Zac Lim, the general manager of Team Whales, and also manager of the Whales Buddy app (we'll get to this in a bit). Needless to say, both parties are excited to venture on this new journey and grow together.
Team Whales' captain, Kuang "Stewart9k" Jian Sew, expressed his utmost gratitude for the Whales Esports' financial backing. Not only will their support allow them to fully focus on training, but they can also explore more opportunities such as live streaming, content creation, building ourselves up as influencers, and more. "Most importantly, we've become clearer about our career path, so we can properly focus on it 100%, unlike other professional athletes who may still feel lost about their paths," Stewart said.
After placing fifth in the PMPL MY/SG Season 2 (PUBG Mobile Professional League Malaysia/Singapore Fall Split 2020) Finals as Team No Recoil, Team Whales have their sights set on qualifying for PMPL SEA Finals Season 3. "We were just one step away from entering SEA Finals last season, so we will do everything in our power to make it happen this time," Tee “inSomnus" Yeu Terng said. "Let's hope everything goes well."

Whales Esports was founded last year by CEO Morgan LB and a number of Malaysian actors and artists like Adrian Tan and Zac Lim. Whales Esports also own an Honor of Kings team named Tiger League Club (TLC).
Aside from cultivating esports athletes and streamers and organising tournaments, Whales Esports are currently developing the Whales Buddy app, a platform to find gaming companions and even features esports tournament functions. The app is now in beta stage, and will be available soon on Google Play and the App Store.
