If you like your school manga with a bit more tension than the usual rom-com formula, there’s a new one to watch.

The May issue of Akita Shoten’s Bessatsu Shōnen Champion has revealed that writer Yukiaki Kurando and artist WOOMA are launching a brand new manga titled Kimi no Kao de Boku ni Kiss shite. The series will begin in the magazine’s July issue, which goes on sale on June 15.

The setup already sounds pretty drama-heavy. The story takes place in a school built around a strict hierarchy system, where students are ranked. At the center are Shikima, an elite A-rank student, and Azuki, an E-rank student at the very bottom. These two are supposed to live in totally different worlds, but after a certain incident, they end up in a relationship.

That kind of premise has a lot of room for chaos, social pressure, and the sort of character drama that can either become super addictive or completely unhinged, and honestly, that’s why this one stands out a bit. School ranking stories are already easy bait for readers who enjoy power gaps, rivalry, and status-driven tension, but throwing a relationship into the middle of that makes it even more interesting.

For Malaysian and SEA manga fans, this is the kind of title worth keeping on the radar early, especially if you follow new serialisations before they become bigger online conversation pieces. A lot of manga buzz in the region starts small like this, then suddenly your timeline is full of fan edits, reaction posts, and people arguing over which character is toxic. If the chemistry and drama land properly, this could be one of those series.

Kurando is not exactly new to darker or more intense material either. He previously launched the suspense manga Then Shall I Kill in Your Stead? with artist Sōsō Sakakibara in Akita Shoten’s Bessatsu Young Champion back in November 2018. That series wrapped up in November, and it also received a three-chapter epilogue. Akita Shoten released the manga’s 11th compiled volume in August 2025.

There’s also some overseas licensing movement connected to Kurando’s past work. Yen Press licensed Then Shall I Kill in Your Stead? and is set to publish the first volume on August 25. On top of that, Kodansha USA Publishing also releases Kurando and Yūsuke Nomura’s Dolly Kill Kill, which has 11 volumes.

So while Kimi no Kao de Boku ni Kiss shite is a fresh title, Kurando already comes in with a track record, and that gives this launch a bit more weight than a random new serialization announcement.

For now, the main date to remember is June 15. If you’re the type who enjoys checking out new manga before everyone else catches on, this is one to bookmark.
