Katsuhiro Otomo, the legendary creator behind Akira, is officially stepping into a new chapter with the launch of his own anime studio, OVAL GEAR.
For anime fans, this is not some small industry update. Otomo is one of the biggest names in Japanese animation history, mainly because Akira did more than just become a cult classic. The 1988 cyberpunk film helped push anime onto the global stage, influencing directors, artists, game creators, and sci-fi storytellers for decades.
Now, Otomo is building a studio focused on continuing the kind of visual identity and artistic approach he has developed across his career. According to the announcement, OVAL GEAR is not just a company name on paper either — the studio already has a new title in production.
Details on that project are still under wraps, with the studio saying more information will be shared once preparations are ready. So yes, no trailer, no key visual, no title drop yet. But the fact that something is already being made under Otomo’s new studio banner is enough to get anime fans paying attention.
OVAL GEAR is also recruiting. The studio is looking for both experienced animation professionals and younger creators who are serious about working in anime production. That part matters because studios built around major creators can sometimes become places where a very specific artistic style is preserved, refined, and passed down to a new generation.
For Malaysian and SEA anime fans, this is the kind of news worth watching closely. Akira’s influence is everywhere — from cyberpunk games and anime aesthetics to streetwear, bike scenes, neon city visuals, and dystopian sci-fi vibes. Even if someone has never watched Akira properly, they have probably seen something inspired by it.
Otomo’s wider anime work also includes Steamboy and Memories, both of which carry that same obsession with visual detail, scale, machinery, and atmosphere. He is not the type of creator who just makes content to fill a release calendar. When his name is attached, fans expect strong worldbuilding and serious craft.
Of course, the big question now is what OVAL GEAR’s first project actually is. Some fans are already wondering if it could be linked to Orbital Era, Otomo’s long-awaited sci-fi anime movie that was first announced back in 2019. Nothing has been confirmed, so jangan terlalu cepat hype dulu — but the timing will definitely fuel speculation.
If it does end up being Orbital Era, that would be massive. If it is something completely new, that might be even more exciting. Either way, OVAL GEAR gives Otomo a dedicated space to develop animation with his own creative DNA at the centre.
Anime fans in Malaysia should keep this on the radar, especially if you are into sci-fi, cyberpunk, retro-futuristic visuals, or films that feel more like landmark events than seasonal releases. We do not know when OVAL GEAR’s first title will arrive, but with Otomo involved and production already moving, this is one studio announcement that actually feels important.
