Kana, the manga imprint under Abrams ComicArts, has picked up Tsubonari’s Antengai: Twilight Metropolis for an English-language release, with the first launch planned for spring 2027.
For Malaysian and SEA manga readers who prefer collecting in English, this is one to keep on the radar — especially if your taste leans more toward moody supernatural cities than another straight-up school battle setup.
Antengai: Twilight Metropolis, originally titled Antengai Gensō Kiroku, is set in Antengai, a strange city sitting alone on an isolated island. It does not belong to any country, answers to no government, and is completely separated from the outside world. Basically, the kind of place where the vibes are already sus before the first chapter even starts.
Inside this city, humans live alongside ayakashi, supernatural beings from Japanese folklore. But this is not presented as some peaceful fantasy neighbourhood. Antengai is described as a lawless urban sprawl, and the manga follows different residents as they chase the hidden truths buried inside the city. The bigger question is not just what they will discover, but how much they are willing to sacrifice to get those answers.
That setup gives the series a very specific appeal. If you enjoy manga where the location feels like a character by itself — think cursed districts, secret societies, folklore creatures, and city-wide mysteries — Antengai sounds like it sits comfortably in that lane. For SEA readers, especially those already into yokai or ayakashi stories through anime, games, and manga, this could be a nice addition to the shelf once the English edition arrives.
Tsubonari first published the manga on Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha’s Comic Ruelle service in 2018. Its compiled volume was released in Japan in August 2018. The world of Antengai did not stop there either. Tsubonari later published a sequel manga, Antengai Kisō Yakyoku, on Comic Ruelle in 2021, with its volume released in April that year. A third sequel, Antengai Rasen Sōki, ran from 2022 to 2023, and its volume shipped in May 2024.
For local fans, the important bit is that Kana’s license gives the series a clearer path to English-speaking audiences. We will have to wait and see how easily it becomes available through Malaysian bookstores, online retailers, or import channels closer to 2027. But this is exactly the kind of niche supernatural manga that can build quiet hype among collectors who want something darker and more atmospheric than mainstream shonen fare.
Spring 2027 is still a while away, but if Kana handles the release well, Antengai: Twilight Metropolis could be a strong pickup for readers who like urban fantasy with mystery, folklore, and a slightly dangerous city-night energy.
