Kadokawa has confirmed that En Mikami’s Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files is finally getting a proper TV anime adaptation, and this one is already worth keeping on the 2027 radar.
The anime will be produced by CloverWorks, the studio behind plenty of polished modern anime productions, and is scheduled to premiere in 2027. For fans in Malaysia and SEA who enjoy slower, character-driven mysteries instead of another loud battle shounen, this could be one of those “quietly best of the season” titles if the execution lands.
A literary mystery series with serious pedigree
The original novel series, known in Japanese as Biblia Koshodō no Jiken Techō, began in 2011 with Shioriko-san to Kimyō na Kyakujin-tachi. The series features artwork by Hagu Koshijima and has grown into a major hit, with more than 6.4 million copies sold.
That is not small potatoes, bro. For a mystery novel series built around old books and case-solving, those numbers show there is a strong audience behind it — not just niche hype.
The books were also nominated for the Japan Mystery Writers Association Award in the Long Story category in both 2012 and 2014, which gives this adaptation a bit more weight. This is not some random IP being dusted off for content. It has history.
The series is split into two main parts. The first run ended with the seventh novel, while the story is now in its second series. The 11th novel shipped in March 2024.
CloverWorks is bringing in a strong staff
The TV anime will be directed by Mamoru Kanbe, whose credits include SHOSHIMIN: How to become Ordinary, Sound of the Sky, and The Perfect Insider. That is a pretty fitting résumé for something mystery-focused and atmospheric.
Ayako Kurata is assistant director, while Toshiya Ono is handling the series scripts. Ono previously worked with Kanbe on SHOSHIMIN and The Perfect Insider, so there is already some creative familiarity here.
Character designs are by Jun Nakai, who is also serving as chief animation director. Nakai’s credits include NieR:Automata Ver 1.1a, Silver Spoon, and Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files: Rail Zeppelin Grace note. Music will be composed by Takahiro Obata.
The announced cast includes Riko Akechi and Shunsuke Takeuchi.
Not the first adaptation attempt
Biblia has been adapted before. A live-action TV series aired in 2013, and Crunchyroll began streaming it in 2014.
Kadokawa also announced back in 2017 that the novels would get both a live-action film and an anime film. The live-action movie eventually opened in November 2018, but the anime film never materialised, with no further details released after the original announcement.
So for long-time fans, this 2027 TV anime feels like the project finally getting a second chance — and probably in a better format too. A TV series gives mystery stories more breathing room than a single film, especially if the anime wants to build atmosphere, character relationships, and case-by-case intrigue properly.
Why Malaysian anime fans should care
SEA anime fans have been eating well with action, fantasy, and romance releases, but good mystery anime still feels like a rarer treat. If you enjoy shows where the appeal is in the mood, the dialogue, the clues, and the character dynamics, this is one to watch.
Also, because the anime only premieres in 2027, there is plenty of time for Malaysian fans to catch up on the franchise’s background. Streaming details for the new anime have not been announced yet, so we will have to wait and see whether platforms accessible in Malaysia pick it up closer to release.
Until then, the big takeaway is simple: Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia’s Case Files has a proven source, an experienced mystery-friendly team, and CloverWorks behind the animation. Quiet hype, but real hype.
