The Blue Lock live-action movie is moving closer to kickoff, and the latest update finally gives fans a better look at what Japan is cooking.
A new trailer has been released for the film, and the production has also confirmed Mei Hata as Anri Teieri. She joins a lineup that already includes Masataka Kubota as the gloriously unhinged mastermind Jinpachi Ego.
The movie is set to premiere in Japan on August 7, 2026. No Malaysia or wider SEA cinema release has been announced yet, so local fans will need to wait and see whether this gets picked up for regional screenings. Considering how huge Blue Lock is among anime fans here, especially with the football angle, this one feels like the kind of title that could pull a solid crowd if it lands in Malaysian cinemas.

Anri also received a character poster alongside the announcement, which makes sense because she’s a key figure in the whole Blue Lock project setup. She is not the loudest character in the room, but without her, Ego’s insane striker factory basically has no proper bridge to the football association side of things.
Why this matters for SEA fans
Live-action anime adaptations always come with that familiar fan anxiety: will it actually capture the energy, or will it look like cosplay with a budget? For Blue Lock, the challenge is even bigger because the series is built on exaggerated ego, high-speed football, and dramatic internal monologues that feel very anime.
That said, the concept itself is easy to understand even for casual viewers: Japan wants to create the ultimate selfish striker capable of winning the World Cup. For Malaysian and SEA fans, where football culture is massive even outside anime circles, Blue Lock has always had that extra hook. It’s shonen tournament energy, but with boots, goals, and toxic striker psychology. Memang ngam for group chat debates.
The film was announced together with Season 3 of the TV anime, so the franchise is clearly not slowing down. The anime, produced by 8bit, has already released two TV seasons and the Blue Lock -Episode Nagi- movie. The series is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
Staff behind the movie
The live-action film is directed by Yusuke Taki, with Tetsuo Kamata handling the screenplay. Shinzo Matsuhashi is producing, Credeus is in charge of production, and Toho is distributing the movie in Japan.
The original Blue Lock manga is written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura, with Kodansha publishing the manga in English.
For now, the big question for us in Malaysia is simple: will this get a local theatrical run, or are we waiting for streaming later? Either way, Blue Lock fans should keep an eye on this one.
