Bandai Namco Entertainment has locked in the release date for Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters, and anime-football fans finally have something concrete to mark on the calendar.
The new game based on Yōichi Takahashi’s legendary Captain Tsubasa manga will launch on August 28 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The date was revealed through a new trailer released on Tuesday.
For Malaysia and SEA players, the platform spread is honestly the best part of this announcement. Switch means it is easy to bring the game over for couch sessions, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S cover the console crowd, while Steam gives PC players a direct route without needing to jump through region headaches. If you grew up with Captain Tsubasa reruns, football anime nostalgia, or just like arcade-style sports games with dramatic special moves, this is one to watch.
Pre-orders will come with a few cosmetic extras: a 2026 Japan National Team Jersey, a World Youth Jersey, and an Early Unlock Pack. Bandai Namco is also offering an Ultimate Edition, which includes five uniforms, two exclusive main menu themes, three ball customizations, the season pass, and additional content.
In terms of playable content, Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters will feature 22 national teams and more than 110 playable characters. That is a decent-sized roster, especially for a series where the fun usually comes from seeing which over-the-top shots, rivalries, and anime-style football moments make it into the game.
Bandai Namco Entertainment America also posted a video interview with Takahashi about the game, adding a nice creator-side touch to the rollout. For longtime fans, that matters because Captain Tsubasa is not just another sports IP. Takahashi’s original manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1981 to 1988 across 37 volumes, and it went on to inspire multiple TV anime series, anime films, OVAs, and even a stage play. The manga has been released in around 20 countries, which shows how far Tsubasa’s football dream travelled.
The franchise has also been moving through its final era in recent years. Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun followed Tsubasa’s goal of representing Japan at the Olympics, starting in Grand Jump in 2013 before moving to Captain Tsubasa Magazine in 2020. Its final saga, Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun The Final, began in April 2023 and ended in April 2024, alongside Takahashi’s announcement that he would retire from serialised manga work. The story continues in storyboard form through Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun Finals on the franchise’s website.
For newer fans, the timing is also pretty solid. Shueisha’s MANGA Plus added all chapters of the original Captain Tsubasa manga in English in April 2025, marking the first solo English release of the manga. So if you only know the anime, the mobile games, or the memes about impossible bicycle kicks, there is now a cleaner way to catch up before the new game drops.
No Malaysia-specific pricing has been announced in the source report, so SEA players should keep an eye on Steam and local console storefronts closer to launch. But with a late-August release, multiple platforms, and a roster built around international teams, Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters could be a fun pick for anime fans and football kaki looking for something more stylish than a normal sports sim.
