The next Crayon Shin-chan movie is going full supernatural, and the cast list just got a pretty stacked upgrade.
The official website for Eiga Crayon Shin-chan Kikikaikai! Ora no Yōkai Bake-shon — translated as Crayon Shin-chan The Movie Super Strange! My Yōkai Monster Vacation — has announced seven additional cast members for the film. This will be the 33rd 2D anime film in the long-running Crayon Shin-chan movie series.
The new cast additions are:
- Yūki Kaji as Hyakuemon, described as an intelligent and mysterious yokai
- Aya Endō as Mameta, a tanuki who helps Shinnosuke and becomes curious about humans
- Hiro Shimono as Karakura, an umbrella yokai who is cautious around humans
- Inori Minase as Pinko, a strong but gentle amabie yokai
- Shunsuke Sakuya as Kumada no Osa, the leader of yokai land and the Naka Yōkaijō government
- Mikako Komatsu as Tsuchiko, a yokai who has feelings for Hyakuemon
- Setsuji Satō as Kapparapa Taichō, the chief of an organisation that maintains order in yokai land
Small note: the romanised character names are not official yet, so expect possible spelling tweaks when more international materials arrive.
This time, the story sends the Nohara family into a yokai-focused adventure. Shinnosuke and family travel to Hiroshi’s hometown in Akita for a famous summer fireworks festival. Of course, because this is Shin-chan, things do not stay normal for long. An incident causes yokai to break out from their world, creating chaos in Akita and beyond. The Nohara family eventually enters the land of yokai themselves, where they find a strange but nostalgic world and get dragged into another unpredictable adventure.
The film already had Sairi Itō confirmed as Yako, a nine-tailed fox yokai. Sakamoto from the comedy duo Mayurika also joins as the Squid Yōkai, a first base player for the Edomae Sushies baseball team, which challenges Shin-chan and his friends to a match.
Returning cast members include Yumiko Kobayashi, Miki Narahashi, Toshiyuki Morikawa, and Satomi Koorogi.
Behind the scenes, Masaki Watanabe is directing. His credits include Battle Spirits: Heroes and Sakamoto Days. The script is handled by Yoshiko Nakamura, who has worked on the Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- franchise and PriPara. Production is by Shinei Animation, TV Asahi, ADK Emotions, and Futabasha, with TOHO distributing the film in Japan.
The movie is scheduled to open in Japan on July 31, 2026. No Malaysian or wider SEA release details were included in the announcement, so local fans will need to wait for cinema or streaming updates.
For Malaysia and SEA audiences, Shin-chan is one of those titles that quietly cuts across generations. Some fans grew up with the cheeky TV anime, while younger viewers may know the movies through streaming or family watch sessions. A yokai-themed story also feels like a smart move because it gives the movie a strong Japanese folklore flavour while still keeping the usual chaotic Nohara family energy.
The previous film, Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Magnificent! Scorching Kasukabe Dancers, opened in Japan on August 8, 2025. It sold 363,000 tickets and earned 450,283,700 yen in its first three days, then reached 516,000 tickets and 633 million yen across its first four days, helped by Japan’s Mountain Day holiday.
The Crayon Shin-chan TV anime first premiered in April 1992 and still airs on TV Asahi every Saturday at 4:30 p.m. JST. The franchise also recently expanded with the TV anime adaptation of Nohara Hiroshi Hirumeshi no Ryūgi, a Hiroshi Nohara lunch-focused spinoff manga, which premiered on October 3.
