Crunchyroll has added more The Quintessential Quintuplets content for fans who still belum move on from the Nakano sisters.

The platform is now streaming two anime specials: The Quintessential Quintuplets ∽ and The Quintessential Quintuplets Specials 2, with subtitles available in eight languages. For Malaysian and SEA anime fans, this is the kind of pickup that matters because it makes the franchise easier to follow legally without needing to hunt down old limited screenings or wait for random regional releases.

The Quintessential Quintuplets ∽ first arrived in Japanese cinemas in July 2023 before airing on TV in Japan in September 2023. The special focused on stories that had not been covered in earlier anime projects, so it is not just a simple recap or filler drop. If you have only watched the main seasons and movie, this is extra material that fills in more of the quintuplets’ everyday charm.

Meanwhile, The Quintessential Quintuplets Specials 2 had a three-week limited theatrical run in Japan in September 2024. It opened strongly enough to rank at No. 5 during its first weekend and earned 154,182,270 yen — around US$1.06 million at the time — in its first three days.

The specials continue with familiar creative hands behind the franchise. Masato Jinbo, who directed The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie, directed the anime at Bibury Animation Studio and also handled the series scripts. Original creator Negi Haruba is credited for script collaboration, while Masato Katsumata, who worked on The Quintessential Quintuplets ∬ and the movie, returned for character designs.

For anyone newer to the series, The Quintessential Quintuplets began as Haruba’s manga in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine in August 2017 and wrapped in February 2020. The manga has crossed 20 million copies in circulation, which explains why the franchise still has legs even after its main story reached a finale.

The anime adaptation started with a 12-episode first season in January 2019, followed by a second season that aired from January to March 2021. The Quintessential Quintuplets the Movie opened in Japan in May 2022 and served as the story’s finale at the time. That film sold around 1.7 million tickets and made about 2.24 billion yen, roughly US$14 million back then. Crunchyroll later screened it in the United States and Canada with English subtitles and an English dub in December 2022.

The franchise also has more beyond anime. A new light novel was announced in April 2024, with Haruba drafting the original story concept and Hajime Asano writing it. The novel covers parts of the quintuplets’ daily lives that were not shown in the original manga. There was also a 2024 stage play adaptation starring fourth-generation members of idol group Hinatazaka46.

For Malaysian fans, this Crunchyroll release is basically a neat catch-up window. The main story may already be “done”, but these specials give longtime fans more time with the sisters — and for a comfort-watch romance franchise like this, that is already cukup nice.
