Classic sci-fi fans, this one is worth keeping on your radar: Cyborg 009: Nemesis has dropped a new update, revealing additional cast members alongside a fresh visual for the upcoming anime series.
The anime is based on Shoutarou Ishinomori’s action sci-fi manga Cyborg 009, one of those old-school titles that helped shape the whole “enhanced humans fighting bigger-than-life threats” lane long before modern superhero anime became the norm. This new Nemesis project is set to begin streaming in Summer 2026.
For Malaysian and SEA anime fans, the main hook here is simple: this is not just another seasonal sci-fi title. Cyborg 009 is legacy material. If you grew up on newer action series, this is the kind of franchise where you can see the DNA of a lot of modern team-based sci-fi anime — special abilities, engineered soldiers, identity struggles, and big moral questions wrapped in action.
The newly highlighted cast includes some very recognisable names:
-
Yuuki Kaji as Joe Shimamura / 009
Kaji is a massive pull, especially for fans who know him from Attack on Titan and Guilty Crown. Putting him in the 009 role gives the series a strong emotional anchor right away. -
Rina Hidaka as Mew / Nemesis 001
Hidaka, known from titles like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime, joins the Nemesis side of the cast. That already suggests the anime is not only leaning on nostalgia, but also bringing in seiyuu that current anime fans will instantly recognise. -
Yoshimasa Hosoya as Blizzard / Nemesis 002
Hosoya’s credits include Trigun Stampede, and his voice usually brings a grounded, intense presence. For a sci-fi action role, that’s a solid fit. -
Hiroshi Kamiya as Crack / Nemesis 003
Kamiya is another big name, with roles across One Piece and Bungo Stray Dogs. His addition makes the cast list feel properly premium, not just a token legacy revival.
The official update also revealed a new visual, which is important because this kind of remake/revival lives or dies on presentation. Older franchises can be tricky: go too retro and younger fans may bounce off; modernise too hard and longtime fans complain. So the visual direction will be one of the biggest things to watch as we get closer to release.
For SEA viewers, the “begin streaming” wording is also good news. It means this should be easier to follow legally compared to older anime eras where everyone had to hunt for episodes in random corners of the internet. The big question now is which platform will pick it up for Malaysia and the wider region — Netflix, Crunchyroll, Prime Video, or another streamer. No local platform details have been announced yet.
What makes Cyborg 009: Nemesis interesting is that it has a chance to introduce a classic franchise to a completely new crowd. If the production can balance old-school sci-fi drama with modern pacing, this could land nicely with fans who enjoy action anime with a bit more history behind it.
Summer 2026 is still some distance away, but with a stronger cast lineup now in place, Cyborg 009: Nemesis is starting to look like one of the season’s more interesting legacy revivals. Not every reboot hits, but this one has enough names attached to make anime fans pay attention.
