Cygames Is Sponsoring a Kentucky Derby Day Race, and Yes, This Is Very Umamusume-Coded

Cygames is making another big real-world horse racing move, and honestly, this one makes perfect sense if you have been watching how hard the company has been pushing Umamusume: Pretty Derby globally.

The Japanese game and anime company has announced that it will sponsor a race during the 152nd Kentucky Derby. The race is officially titled Pleasant Colony Presented by Cygames and is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

For now, Cygames has not shared the full race details yet. That means fans will have to wait for things like the exact race time and track information. What has been confirmed is the branding presence: the Cygames logo will appear across several major race-day placements, including horse saddle towels, the starting gate, the finish line, and the winner’s circle.

Not Cygames’ First Derby Moment

This is not a random one-off sponsorship. Cygames already had a Kentucky Derby-linked race last year with the Unbridled Sidney Stakes Presented by Cygames.

That 2025 race was a Grade III event run over 1,100 meters, or 5 1/2 furlongs, and was open to fillies and mares aged three years and above. It also carried a very serious purse of US$400,000.

So yes, Cygames is clearly not just putting a logo somewhere for fun. The company is building a proper relationship with global horse racing events, which lines up very naturally with the popularity of Umamusume: Pretty Derby.

Why Anime Fans Should Care

For Malaysian and SEA fans, horse racing might not be the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about anime or mobile games. But Umamusume changed that conversation in a very weird, very anime way.

The franchise started as a mobile game, then expanded into manga, TV anime, OVAs, and even a theatrical film. Its whole concept — turning legendary racehorses into anime girl athletes — could have sounded too niche on paper. Instead, it became a massive cross-media hit.

More importantly, it introduced a younger anime and gaming audience to the culture, language, and drama of horse racing. That matters because Cygames is not only promoting a franchise anymore; it is helping connect fandom culture with an old-school sport that many younger viewers may have ignored otherwise.

The source material also notes that racecourses in Southeast Asia and Latin America have hosted Umamusume-related events and cosplay races. That is the part SEA fans should keep an eye on. If Cygames keeps treating real-world racing as part of the franchise ecosystem, there is always a chance we see more regional fan activations, cosplay-friendly race events, or game booths in SEA markets.

Malaysia’s anime crowd already shows up hard for ACG events, cosplay showcases, mobile game booths, and gacha-related activations. An Umamusume-themed event here would not be that shocking anymore, especially with Cygames pushing the brand beyond Japan.

Cygames Is Going Global With Racing

The Kentucky Derby sponsorship is only one part of the company’s broader racing push. Cygames is also sponsoring the Surrey Stakes at the Betfred Derby Festival in Epsom Downs, England, and the Gran Premio Latinoamericano in Lima, Peru.

As for whether Cygames will set up a booth at this year’s Kentucky Derby, that has not been announced. In 2025, the company did bring a 360° photo and game booth, where visitors could try titles such as Umamusume: Pretty Derby, Granblue Fantasy, and Shadowverse: Worlds Beyond.

The Kentucky Derby itself has been around since 1875 and remains one of the most iconic horse racing events in the United States. It is also the opening leg of the American Triple Crown and is known as the biggest, most watched, and most attended race in that series.

For Cygames, being visible at that level is a strong signal. Umamusume may be anime and game culture, but the brand is now moving in spaces where actual racing history lives. That crossover is exactly why fans should pay attention.
