Dragonite Gets a Proper Spotlight in Pokémon’s New Anime Short

Pokémon fans, especially the ones who like the softer side of the franchise, this one is worth putting on your watchlist.

The official Pokémon YouTube channel has released Dragonite and the Special Delivery for English-speaking viewers, giving more fans access to a 15-minute animated short that first premiered on Pokémon Day 2025. Instead of gym battles, tournament arcs, or legendary-level drama, this special zooms in on something way more chill: a mail carrier, a lost letter, and one very lovable Dragonite.

The short is produced by CoMix Wave Films, the studio best known for Your Name, so yes, the visuals are doing a lot of heavy lifting here. The animation has that warm, polished, emotional style that makes even small everyday moments feel huge. For Pokémon fans who grew up with the anime but now want something a bit more heartfelt and cinematic, this feels like a nice makan break from the usual action-heavy stuff.

The story follows Hana, a mail worker whose dream was sparked years earlier after meeting a Dragonite that carried mail. But after spending a long time stuck in the mailroom, that early excitement has faded. Things change when she finds a letter without a proper address, pushing her to personally track down where it belongs. Alongside her Fuecoco and the same Dragonite that inspired her in the first place, Hana heads out to complete the delivery.

What makes this special interesting is that it is not trying to be epic. No badge quest. No big villain. No dramatic arena fight. Like Pokémon Horizons, it leans into the everyday bond between humans and Pokémon — the kind of worldbuilding that makes the franchise feel alive beyond battling. Hana is not trying to become the strongest trainer in the region. She just wants to help people connect, and her Pokémon are there because they believe in that simple mission.

That angle hits surprisingly well, especially for SEA viewers. A lot of Malaysian fans grew up with Pokémon as a weekend cartoon, a Game Boy obsession, or later as mobile nostalgia through Pokémon GO. But now many of those fans are working adults, students, or creators dealing with burnout and routine. Hana losing sight of why she started her job feels very real, bro. The short takes that feeling and wraps it in a gentle Pokémon adventure without becoming too heavy.

And then there is Dragonite. The Kanto Dragon-type has always been a funny design contradiction: huge dragon body, soft round face, friendly energy. It can look powerful and goofy at the same time, which is probably why this short works so well. Dragonite and the Special Delivery understands that Dragonite does not need to be made edgy to be cool. Its charm comes from being kind, dependable, and slightly awkward in the best way.

For Malaysian and SEA fans who mainly follow Pokémon through the games, merch drops, or the main anime, this is a reminder that the franchise can still surprise when it slows down. It is short enough to watch during lunch, pretty enough for anime fans, and wholesome without feeling kosong.

If you want a Pokémon story that is less about winning and more about remembering why a dream mattered in the first place, give this one a shot.
