Final Fantasy XI may not be the loudest name in Square Enix’s line-up today, but bro, this game has history. To celebrate the MMORPG’s 24th anniversary, Square Enix released a new animated short titled “Our Adventure Never Ends” — a neat little tribute to the world of Vana’diel and the players who have kept the journey alive for more than two decades.
The short was previewed through the official Final Fantasy XI X account with a simple anniversary message: “Celebrating 24 years of FFXI!” Animation filmmaker Wakaboku created the video, while long-time Square Enix composer Naoshi Mizuta provided the music.
At only around one minute long, it is not trying to be some huge cinematic trailer. Instead, it feels more like a love letter. The video follows a party of Final Fantasy XI adventurers travelling through Vana’diel, facing monsters, and showing off the game’s races and jobs. For old-school MMO fans, that is already enough to trigger the nostalgia button.
Why Final Fantasy XI still matters
Final Fantasy XI first launched on May 16, 2002 for the PlayStation 2, making it the franchise’s first proper MMORPG. It later arrived on PC in November 2002 and Xbox 360 in April 2006.
That timeline is wild when you think about it from a Malaysia/SEA perspective. Back then, online gaming here was still very much tied to cybercafes, patch CDs, prepaid game time, and slow internet that tested your patience gila. Final Fantasy XI was part of that early era where console and PC players were figuring out what a persistent online RPG world could even be.
Since launch, the game has received five major expansions, with Seekers of Adoulin arriving in 2013. More recently, the story arc The Voracious Resurgence began in 2020 and wrapped its final chapter in May 2023.
So while Final Fantasy XIV is the MMO most newer fans talk about now, XI is the OG that helped Square Enix learn how to build a long-running online Final Fantasy world.
The FFXIV connection
Final Fantasy XIV launched later in September 2010 on PC, and it has since become one of the biggest modern MMORPGs globally. Its latest expansion, Dawntrail, launched in July 2024 and includes an Alliance Raid series based on Final Fantasy XI.
That crossover is actually a smart move. A lot of SEA players may know Final Fantasy mainly through XIV, VII Remake, XVI, or mobile spin-offs, but this raid connection gives newer fans a reason to look back at XI’s legacy. It is not just “old MMO history” — it is still influencing current Final Fantasy content.
For Malaysian Final Fantasy fans, this anniversary short is a nice reminder that the franchise’s MMO roots go deeper than XIV. Vana’diel helped set the template for party roles, long-term worldbuilding, and that very specific MMO feeling of logging in because your friends are waiting.
A small tribute, but a meaningful one
“Our Adventure Never Ends” is short, but the message is clear: Final Fantasy XI is still part of Square Enix’s identity. Not every 24-year-old online game gets a fresh animated tribute, especially one with original music and a proper creative hand behind it.
If you grew up around the PS2 era, old PC MMORPGs, or you are currently deep in FFXIV, this one is worth checking out. It is a quick watch, but for long-time fans, confirm got feels.
