Final Fantasy XIV fans, this one is weird in the best way: chocobo racing is leaving the screen and heading into VR.
TYFFON, the Japanese entertainment company known for VR, AR and mixed reality attractions, has announced a collaboration with Kansai TV and Square Enix for a new Final Fantasy XIV Chocobo Racing VR experience. The attraction is planned for TYFFON’s Tyffonium extended reality theme parks, which are basically dedicated spaces for immersive XR-style entertainment.
No launch date has been revealed yet. TYFFON and Square Enix also have not confirmed which Tyffonium branch will actually get the attraction first.
For now, TYFFON operates two Tyffonium locations in Tokyo: one in Odaiba and another in Shinjuku. The company has also said it plans to expand its operations across Japan, so there is a chance this FFXIV experience could become part of a wider rollout later. But for SEA fans planning Japan trips, don’t book your flight just yet lah — we still need dates and location confirmation.
Why this matters for FFXIV fans
Chocobos are one of Final Fantasy’s most iconic creatures, and Final Fantasy XIV has turned them into companions, mounts, racers and general mascot-tier legends. A full VR attraction built around chocobo racing sounds like the kind of thing that could hit both sides of the fandom: the MMO crowd who live in Eorzea daily, and the casual Final Fantasy fans who just want to ride the big yellow bird.
The interesting part is that this is not just a game update or in-game event. It is Square Enix bringing an FFXIV activity into a physical entertainment space. That makes it closer to a theme park-style fan experience than a normal promo booth.
For Malaysian and SEA players, this is especially relevant because Japan remains the big “anime/game pilgrimage” destination. Tokyo trips already include Akihabara, character cafes, anime shops, arcades and sometimes concerts or exhibitions. If this Chocobo Racing VR attraction launches in an accessible Tokyo location like Shinjuku or Odaiba, it could easily become another stop for FFXIV fans visiting Japan.
SEA fans probably need to wait
Of course, the big question is whether this will ever come outside Japan. Right now, there is no announcement for Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia or any other SEA market. The project is tied to TYFFON’s own Tyffonium venues, and those are currently in Japan.
Still, it is worth watching because XR attractions based on major Japanese IP can travel if there is enough demand. SEA already has a strong appetite for anime, gaming events and themed experiences, from convention activations to pop-up stores. If Square Enix sees good response in Japan, maybe we eventually get more Final Fantasy experiential events closer to home. Not guaranteed, but boleh hope.
For now, the safe takeaway is simple: Final Fantasy XIV Chocobo Racing VR is real, it is being developed through TYFFON, Kansai TV and Square Enix, and it will debut at Tyffonium XR theme parks in Japan. The missing pieces are the launch date and exact venue list.
If you are an FFXIV player with a Japan trip coming up, keep this on your radar. Riding a chocobo in VR sounds like the kind of tourist side quest that could be either super fun or completely chaotic — and honestly, both outcomes sound very Final Fantasy.
