Firion and Balthier Are the Next Fighters Coming to Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy

Square Enix has confirmed the next two characters joining Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy on mobile, and it is a nice mix for long-time Final Fantasy fans. Firion from Final Fantasy II and Balthier from Final Fantasy XII are the latest additions to the roster, with their rollout set for April 14, 2026.

For players in Malaysia and the wider SEA region, this matters for one simple reason: mobile-friendly Final Fantasy games live or die by how often they give fans fresh reasons to log back in. New character drops, especially ones tied to events and progression rewards, usually mean another spike in matchmaking, build experimentation, and gacha pulls.

What Firion brings

Firion is positioned as a close-range damage dealer. Square Enix is framing him as the kind of aggressive melee unit players may compare to Cloud or Lightning, so if your usual style is getting in fast and staying on top of the enemy, he looks like the more straightforward pick of the two.

His trailer also confirms four featured Abilities:

  • Blood Weapon
  • Chain Strike
  • Fervid Blazer
  • Vortex of Arms

He is voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa, a name many anime and game fans will recognise. Outside of Final Fantasy, he is also known for roles like Marth in Fire Emblem, Heero in Gundam Wing, and Akihiko in Persona 3 Reload.

What Balthier brings

Balthier, meanwhile, fills the ranged damage role. Square Enix compares his style more closely to Prompto, which suggests a kit built around keeping space, poking safely, and dealing pressure from a distance rather than diving into close combat.

His featured Abilities are:

  • Blast Shot
  • Element of Treachery
  • Fires of War
  • Piercing Shot

Hiroaki Hirata returns to voice Balthier, reprising the role from Final Fantasy XII. That should be a nice touch for fans who liked Balthier’s original swagger and screen presence.

You still need to unlock them

As with previous character releases in Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy, Firion and Balthier will not simply appear in every player’s roster the moment they go live. To unlock them, players will need Character Tickets. These can be earned through events or by reaching certain pull milestones on Ability gacha banners.

That means this is not just a “log in and claim” update. If you want either character early, you will need to engage with the event loop or spend enough time and resources on the banner system.

A matching event is coming too

Square Enix is also running a Sealed Crystals (Firion / Balthier) event. This gives players a better shot at getting Abilities for both characters through Casual and Ranked Battles. Some of those Abilities will also show up through missions.

For SEA players, that is probably the most practical part of the update. If you are not planning to whale, event-based Ability access is usually where value comes from. Grinding battles for useful drops is a lot more realistic for the average mobile player here than hard committing to banner pulls.

The release also continues the game’s ongoing expansion across the wider Final Fantasy series. Earlier additions already pulled in names like Warrior of Light, Onion Knight, Kain, Krile, Terra, Cloud, Rinoa, Zidane, Iroha, Lightning, Gaia, and Prompto.

So if you have been waiting for a reason to jump back in, this is one of the better times to do it, especially if Firion’s rushdown style or Balthier’s ranged pressure sounds like your kind of character.
