Ghost in the Shell is officially coming back, and this reboot is one that cyberpunk fans should keep on the radar.
The new anime, titled The Ghost in the Shell, is set to premiere in Japan on July 7, 2026 as part of the Summer 2026 anime season. For fans outside Japan, the big news is that the series will stream worldwide on Prime Video, which means Malaysian and SEA viewers should not need to wait around for some messy delayed rollout. Nice.
This is a fresh reboot of Masamune Shirow’s legendary manga, and it marks the franchise’s first newly rebooted anime adaptation in almost a decade. Ghost in the Shell has been reimagined many times over the years, from the iconic 1995 film to Stand Alone Complex and more recent projects, but this version seems to be leaning harder into the original manga’s vibe and retro-futuristic style.
That is a big deal because, let’s be honest, not every Ghost in the Shell project has landed cleanly. The previous CG-heavy take received plenty of criticism from fans over its visual direction and character redesigns. This new reboot already has stronger hype behind it thanks to Science SARU, the studio known for stylish, high-energy work like DAN DA DAN.
The production team is pretty stacked too. Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G. are involved in the project, while Moko-chan is making their anime directorial debut at Science SARU. Toh Enjoe is handling scripts, Shuhei Handa is on character design and chief animation director duties, and the music will come from Ryo Konishi and Yuki Kanesaka.
Story-wise, the reboot brings viewers back to 2029 Japan, where society is deeply wired into massive information networks while governments, corporations, and ethnic groups still hold power. At the centre is Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg who leads an elite combat unit that includes Batou.
Kusanagi begins imagining a specialised team built to stop emerging threats before they spiral out of control. At the same time, Daisuke Aramaki from the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been planning a similar unit. Their paths merge, leading to the formation of Public Security Section 9, also known here as the “Shell Squad.”
From there, the team gets pulled into cybercrime cases, international conspiracies, and the appearance of a mysterious hacker called the Puppet Master. If you know Ghost in the Shell, you already know this is where the series starts asking the good stuff: what counts as human, who controls identity, and what happens when technology becomes too deeply tied to the soul.
For Malaysian anime fans, the Prime Video release is probably the most practical win here. Ghost in the Shell has always been one of those titles people hear about as a “must-watch classic,” but the franchise can feel intimidating if you are new. A reboot with modern production, global streaming, and a clear starting point could make this the easiest way for younger SEA viewers to jump in.
If Science SARU nails the balance between old-school cyberpunk atmosphere and modern animation energy, this could be one of Summer 2026’s biggest anime conversation starters. Not overhyping yet, bro, but Ghost in the Shell with this team behind it? Memang worth watching.
