The new Ghost in the Shell anime finally has a date: July 7, 2026. After plenty of waiting, Science SARU has confirmed when its fresh take on Masamune Shirow’s legendary cyberpunk manga will arrive.
A new trailer dropped on May 11, giving fans a clearer look at Motoko Kusanagi, her squad, and the kind of future-tech chaos this adaptation is aiming for. And honestly, this one matters. Ghost in the Shell is not just “classic anime homework” — it is one of the big reasons cyberpunk anime looks and thinks the way it does today.
This version is being handled by Science SARU, the studio behind Dandadan and Inu-Oh. That alone should get anime fans paying attention. Science SARU is not the type of studio that plays everything safe visually, and the trailer suggests they are leaning into a rougher, more manga-flavoured style rather than simply copying the 1995 film or later TV versions.
The story is set in 2029, in a Japan where the world is linked by huge information networks, but borders, politics, and national interests still very much exist. Basically: super-connected future, same messy human problems. For SEA viewers, that angle feels extra relevant now, bro — cybersecurity, surveillance, AI, digital identity, and online crime are not exactly sci-fi topics anymore. We are already living in the “your data is everywhere” era.
At the centre is Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg who leads an elite combat group. Together with Batou, she imagines a new kind of tactical unit built to respond to cyber threats before they spiral out of control. Meanwhile, Daisuke Aramaki from the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been pushing toward a similar setup. Once Kusanagi and her team are brought in, they begin operating as Public Security Section 9, also known here as Shell Squad.
That means fans can expect cybercrime cases, political conspiracies, and the return of one of Ghost in the Shell’s most famous threats: the Puppet Master. If you know the franchise, you know that name is not random villain-of-the-week material. The Puppet Master is tied to some of the series’ biggest questions about identity, consciousness, and what it even means to be human when your body and mind can be hacked.
The trailer also shows off the Tachikoma, those spider-like AI tanks that somehow manage to be both adorable and terrifying. Cute little robot voices, heavy weapons, zero chill — memang classic Ghost in the Shell energy.
A new key visual was revealed as well, showing Motoko and the rest of Section 9 in uniform. No regional streaming details were included in the source material, so Malaysian and SEA fans will still need to wait for platform confirmation. Hopefully we get proper access without the usual “available everywhere except your region” nonsense.
For anime fans here, this is one to keep on the radar. Between Science SARU’s animation style, Ghost in the Shell’s heavy cyberpunk legacy, and the current real-world obsession with AI and digital security, the timing feels sharp.
Ghost in the Shell premieres July 7, 2026.
