Square Enix is giving another light novel fantasy the manga treatment, and this one has a very satisfying hook: dump the toxic fiancé, throw hands, then chase your magic school dream.
The June issue of Monthly Shonen Gangan announced that artist Odayaka has launched a manga adaptation of Mashimesa Emoto’s Goodbye, Horrible Fiancé, Hello, Fun Magic School Life!. The manga made its advance debut on Square Enix’s Gangan Online app on Tuesday.
The original Japanese title is Konyakusha o Sutetara, Tanoshii Mahō Gakkō no Seikatsu ga Matteimashita!, which basically tells you the whole vibe already: a broken engagement, a fresh start, and a magical academy life waiting on the other side.
What’s the story about?
The series follows Misha, a young noblewoman who gets betrayed by her fiancé. Instead of quietly accepting the drama, she punches him, ends the engagement, and decides to move forward with something she actually wants: trying to enter her dream magic school.
From there, the story shifts into a second-life fantasy setup, with Misha stepping into a louder, freer, and more exciting school life. If you enjoy fantasy stories where the heroine escapes a bad engagement and rebuilds herself with actual agency, this is very much in that lane.
For Malaysian and SEA readers, this is the kind of title that fits nicely beside the current wave of villainess, noble lady, and “restart my life” fantasy series that have been doing well with web novel and manga fans. The appeal is simple: low tolerance for garbage partners, high interest in magic school chaos. Relatable enough, bro.
From web novel to print to manga
Emoto first began the story on Shōsetsuka ni Narō in 2023, the same Japanese web novel platform that has produced a massive number of light novel and anime hits over the years.
The print light novel version is published under Micro Magazine’s GC Novels imprint, with illustrations by Akane Nitou. The first volume came out in Japan in May 2025, followed by the second volume in December.
There is also good news for English-language readers: Cross Infinite World is releasing the light novels in English. That matters for fans in Malaysia and SEA because official English access usually makes it much easier to support these niche fantasy titles without having to rely only on summaries or fan chatter.
Odayaka is already busy with fantasy romance manga
Odayaka is not new to this space either. The artist also handles the manga adaptation of Kureha’s Bride of the Barrier Master light novels, which launched on Kadokawa’s B’s-LOG COMIC digital manga magazine in March 2022.
Kadokawa released the seventh compiled volume of that manga on December 25, and Yen Press publishes the English edition. The original light novel series is also getting an anime adaptation, so Odayaka’s work is already connected to titles with international reach.
On top of that, Tokyopop has licensed Odayaka’s Sanctuary Princess manga and plans to release the first English compiled volume on August 11.
Emoto also has several other fantasy romance and adventure titles, including I Don’t Want To Be the Dragon Duke’s Maid!, A Surprisingly Happy Engagement for the Slime Duke, Expedition Cooking with the Enoch Royal Knights, and Botsuraku Reijō no Ikoku Kekkonroku.
For now, Goodbye, Horrible Fiancé, Hello, Fun Magic School Life! looks like one to watch if you’re into magic academies, revenge-by-self-improvement energy, and heroines who are very done with nonsense.
