Gundam Wing fans, something big is moving

Bandai Namco Filmworks has confirmed that the Mobile Suit Gundam Wing franchise is getting a new “visual project” — and while the studio is not ready to reveal the exact format yet, it does not sound like a tiny teaser or throwaway promo.

The announcement came during the Gundam Conference Spring 2026 livestream on Friday, where Bandai Namco Filmworks board director and producer Naohiro Ogata shared the news. When host Hisanori Yoshida pointed out that a “visual project” could mean anything from a short clip to a movie or even a full TV anime, Ogata kept things locked down but gave one very spicy hint: he cannot reveal the format yet, but it is “definitely something long.”

That wording is important. The Japanese term used, eizō, is broad and can refer to many kinds of screen projects — event footage, home video releases, theatrical works, TV anime, and more. So no, we do not know yet whether this is a movie, series, OVA, or something else. But if Ogata is already saying it is long, Gundam Wing fans have reason to sit up.

Why this matters for Malaysia and SEA fans

For a lot of anime fans in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, Gundam Wing is not just another old mecha title. It is one of those gateway Gundam shows that helped make the franchise feel stylish, dramatic, and accessible outside Japan. The Heero Yuy era hits different, bro — political drama, boy-band-level pilot designs, and mobile suits that looked like every Gunpla collector’s wishlist.

If this new project becomes a full-length anime or film, expect a fresh wave of interest in Wing Gundam, Deathscythe, Heavyarms, Sandrock, and Shenlong/Altron kits. Local hobby shops, Gunpla groups, and convention booths around Malaysia will probably feel the impact, especially if Bandai times new model kit releases around the project. Gundam announcements are never just anime news; they usually echo into merch, collectibles, events, and community hype.

The story so far

The original Mobile Suit Gundam Wing anime premiered in 1995 and ran for 49 episodes. Its story is set in A.C. 195, when space colonies push back against the United Earth Sphere Alliance by sending Gundam mobile suits to Earth under Operation Meteor.

The core cast includes Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner, and Chang Wufei, five pilots thrown into a conflict involving Earth, the colonies, and the secretive organisation OZ, led by Treize Khushrenada. Relena Darlian also becomes deeply tied to Heero and the larger political mess surrounding the war.

Gundam Wing later received the sequel OVA Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz, which debuted in 1997 as a three-episode release. Those episodes were later compiled into a film version with extra footage in 1998. The franchise also has a newer manga, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing 0.5 Point Half Preventer-7, which launched in August. Sakura Asagi is drawing it, while original series writer Katsuyuki Sumisawa is handling the story. The manga connects the timeline between Endless Waltz and the Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop sequel novels.

Still too early, but definitely worth watching

Right now, Bandai Namco Filmworks is keeping the big details hidden: no release date, no format, no staff list, no trailer. But the “something long” comment is enough to put Gundam Wing back on the radar.

For SEA fans who grew up with classic mecha anime, or newer fans who discovered Gundam through Gunpla first, this could be a major revival moment. Hopefully Bandai does not just give us nostalgia bait. Gundam Wing deserves something with proper scale, strong writing, and mobile suit action that actually justifies bringing the name back.
