Hidekaz Himaruya’s Hetalia World Stars Gangsta has officially wrapped up, and the wider Hetalia manga franchise is also taking a breather for now.

Himaruya shared the update on X, formerly Twitter, saying on Wednesday that Hetalia World Stars Gangsta would end on Thursday. At the same time, he confirmed that the overall Hetalia manga franchise is going on break while he focuses on preparing compiled book volumes and working toward future projects.

For longtime Hetalia fans, this is one of those updates that feels small on paper but pretty meaningful if you have followed the franchise across manga, anime, stage musicals, and internet fandom culture for years.

What is Hetalia World Stars Gangsta?

Hetalia World Stars Gangsta is an alternate-universe manga connected to the Hetalia World Stars series. It began running on Shonen Jump+ in February 2024, with Shueisha releasing its first compiled volume in April 2025.

The main Hetalia World Stars manga is the current major manga entry in the franchise. It launched on Shonen Jump+ back in 2014, the same day the digital manga service itself started. The series later went on hiatus in April 2018 before returning in April 2021. Shueisha released the eighth compiled volume in March 2024.

An anime adaptation of Hetalia World Stars also premiered in April 2021, giving the franchise a newer anime push after years of earlier adaptations.

Why Malaysian and SEA fans should care

Hetalia has always been a bit of a unique fandom beast. It is not just another battle shonen or rom-com. The original Hetalia - Axis Powers manga is built around turning countries and regions into mostly bishōnen-style characters, using broad national archetypes as the foundation for its comedy and character dynamics.

That concept made it especially easy for the series to travel across borders online. For Malaysian and SEA anime fans who grew up around fan subs, cosplay events, Tumblr-era fandom, convention skits, and character merch culture, Hetalia is one of those titles that probably popped up even if you were not actively reading it.

The franchise also has a strong stage and event culture in Japan. Hetalia The World Twinkle, the sixth anime season based on Himaruya’s manga, premiered in Japan in July 2015, with Funimation streaming it as it aired. Funimation also released the anime seasons and the Hetalia Axis Powers: Paint it, White! film in North America. On the live stage side, the franchise has continued through musicals, with the latest musical running in June 2025.

For SEA fans, the big thing here is not just that one spin-off ended. It is that Himaruya is pausing the broader manga side to sort out collected volumes and prepare what comes next. That usually means fans should not expect immediate weekly or monthly momentum, but it also leaves the door open for future franchise activity.

A pause, not a goodbye

Based on Himaruya’s update, this sounds more like a planned reset period than a dramatic shutdown. Hetalia World Stars Gangsta has finished, and the main franchise is stepping back while production work continues behind the scenes.

If you are a Hetalia collector in Malaysia or SEA, this is probably the moment to watch for compiled volume updates, Japanese release listings, and import availability. The franchise has always had a loyal collector base, and any new book-volume movement tends to matter for fans who follow the manga beyond just anime adaptations.

So yes, Gangsta is done. But Hetalia itself is not being framed as over. For now, the franchise is simply taking a break before whatever Himaruya has lined up next.
