Pokémon is hitting that rare pop-culture level where it has basically grown up with multiple generations. IGN has marked the franchise’s 30-year milestone by ranking its 30 best Pokémon of all time — and yes, this is the kind of list that will immediately start arguments in every Malaysian Discord server.
The big context: there are now more than 1,000 Pokémon in the official Pokédex, built across decades of mainline games, trading cards, anime seasons, movies, merchandise, and of course, the Pokémon Go era that had people walking around malls and mamaks like it was a national event. So narrowing that whole universe down to 30 favourites is not really a pure stats exercise.
IGN makes it clear that the list is more heart than spreadsheet. Instead of ranking only by competitive viability, anime appearances, TCG value, or merchandise power, the selection leans into the Pokémon that best represent the feeling of the series.
That explains why the names highlighted hit so many different parts of the fandom. Bulbasaur gets love as one of the original starters and a proper nostalgia pick. Arceus is there because, well, it is basically the creator-god of the Pokémon universe. Metagross represents that scary-cool side of Pokémon design, while Dragonite still carries huge Gen 1 energy as the friendly but powerful pseudo-legendary fans never really stopped loving.
There are also picks that speak to personality more than raw power. Hawlucha stands out because it fights with full wrestling drama despite being small. Piplup is adorable but stubborn, which honestly makes it even more memorable. Ditto remains one of the weirdest and most flexible creatures in the franchise, especially with its ability to copy opponents.
Some choices are obvious fan-service in the best way. Eevee is almost impossible to leave out because its evolution gimmick has become one of Pokémon’s most iconic ideas. Lucario has main-character aura thanks to its movie role, Mega Evolution connection, and constant presence beside major trainers. Greninja still has massive anime clout because of Ash-Greninja, one of the coolest battle bonds the show has ever done.
Then you have the darker or more dramatic favourites. Mimikyu is basically a horror story wearing a Pikachu costume, but its whole motivation is heartbreakingly simple: it just wants to be loved. Absol has that misunderstood disaster-warning lore that makes it feel like a mythological creature. Dialga brings the legendary time-control angle from Pokémon Diamond and Legends: Arceus.
For Malaysian and SEA fans, this kind of list matters because Pokémon has never been just one thing here. Some fans came in through Game Boy and DS titles, some through the anime on TV, some through Pokémon Go at KLCC or Sunway Pyramid, and plenty through TCG collecting. A ranking like this becomes less about “correct answer” and more about which era raised you.
It also shows why Pokémon remains so strong in the region. The franchise has a character for every type of fan: competitive players can argue about Snorlax, Gardevoir, Gyarados, or Tyranitar; anime fans will defend Lucario and Greninja; collectors will always have Eevee or starters close to the heart.
Is IGN’s 30 the final word? Obviously not, bro. Pokémon rankings are built to be debated. But as a celebration of 30 years of monsters, memories, battles, cards, and Saturday-morning anime energy, it is a solid reminder of why this franchise still refuses to fade.
