The kitchen is about to get loud again. Iron Wok Jan!, the TV anime adaptation of Shinji Saijyo’s classic cooking manga, has locked in a July 5 debut alongside its main promotional video, more cast details, and opening theme artist.

For Malaysian anime fans, this one is worth keeping on the radar if you enjoy competitive food shows, old-school shonen energy, or anything where cooking is treated like a full-on boss fight.

When does Iron Wok Jan! premiere?

The anime will begin airing in Japan on July 5, with broadcasts scheduled every Sunday at 5:30pm JST on TV Tokyo and its affiliates. That is 4:30pm Malaysia time, so if a SEA streaming platform picks it up, this could become a pretty nice weekend watch slot.

As of the source report, no specific Malaysia or Southeast Asia streaming platform has been announced yet. So for now, local fans should keep an eye on the usual anime services closer to the Summer 2026 season.

Opening theme and new cast details

The opening theme is titled “Hien”, which translates to “Fire Banquet”, performed by the seven-member dance vocal group Genin wa Jibun ni Aru. Honestly, that title fits the whole vibe — Iron Wok Jan! is not the cosy healing-food type of cooking story. It is sharper, louder, and more combative.

The anime also revealed more cast members, with names including M.A.O and Taishi Murata joining the project.

What is Iron Wok Jan! about?

The story follows Jan Akiyama, a talented young chef working at a top-class restaurant. His biggest rival is Kiriko Gobanchō, the granddaughter of the restaurant’s owner and a strong chef herself.

Their clash is not just about who can cook better. Kiriko believes food should be made for the customer, while Jan sees cooking as a battlefield where skill and victory matter most. That difference in philosophy is the main spice here.

If you grew up on anime where every match feels personal — sports anime, tournament arcs, even over-the-top card battles — this has that same DNA, just with woks, knives, and restaurant drama.

The staff behind the anime

The anime is being directed by Ei Aoki at TROYCA. Aoki’s credits include Fate/Zero, Aldnoah.Zero, Girls Bravo, and Wandering Son.

Series scripts are handled by Makoto Uezu, known for work on Akame ga KILL!, Assassination Classroom, Scum’s Wish, and KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world!! Character designs come from Masako Matsumoto, who is also serving as chief animation director, while Tomoki Kikuya is composing the music.

There is also specific food-focused production support, including cuisine animation directors, cuisine supervision, and cooking science supervision. That matters because for a cooking anime, the food cannot just look pretty — the process needs to feel convincing too.

Why SEA fans should care

Cooking anime hits differently in Malaysia and Southeast Asia because food culture here is already competitive by nature. Everyone has opinions about the best char kuey teow, nasi lemak, ramen spot, hotpot chain, or mamak order. So a series built around food philosophy and chef rivalry should translate well for local viewers.

Also, Iron Wok Jan! is not some new random IP. The original manga ran in Weekly Shōnen Champion from 1995 to 2000, with 27 volumes published. The wider franchise has passed 10 million copies in circulation, and it has also received sequels and spinoffs over the years.

That gives the anime a nice mix of nostalgia and discovery. Older manga fans may know the name, while newer anime viewers could be getting their first taste this July.
