The live-action adaptation of Tsunami Umino’s Kuroema: Chole et Emma has shown off a fresh trailer and visual, giving fans their first proper listen to the series’ theme song, “sign” by LAUSBUB.
For Malaysian and SEA viewers, the important bit is this: the mini-series is set to stream worldwide exclusively on Amazon Prime Video from June 12. So if you’re already using Prime Video here for anime, Japanese dramas, or random weekend binge sessions, this should be a straightforward add to the watchlist.
What is Kuroema about?
Kuroema starts with Emma, a 30-year-old woman whose life basically collapses in one brutal combo. Her boyfriend breaks up with her, the company she works for goes bankrupt, and she loses her home all on the same day. That is not just bad luck, that is full-on life patch notes nerfing one character into the ground.
With nowhere to go, Emma ends up wandering into a mansion owned by Chloe, an unusual wealthy heiress who lives by herself. Chloe initially lets Emma stay for just one night, but things escalate after a fire breaks out at Chloe’s home. From there, the two are pushed into figuring out a new living arrangement together.
The story also brings in a fortune-telling shop, mysterious customers, and strange circumstances that pull both women deeper into each other’s lives. Based on the setup, this sounds less like a flashy high-concept drama and more like a character-driven story about two very different women being forced to rebuild from chaos.
That could land well with viewers who enjoy Japanese live-action series with quiet emotional beats, awkward friendships, and slightly oddball situations. Not every manga adaptation needs explosions and tournament arcs, bro.
Cast and staff
The newly listed cast includes Yōji Iwase as Kenshirō Shimon, the second-generation owner of Coffee Shop Paris who supports Chloe. Ken Mitsuishi plays Shingetsu Neisan, a famous and charismatic fortune teller.
Also in the cast are Kai Inowaki as Shōta Mashū, who works at an architectural design firm, and Aoba Kawai as Rika Daian, an architect involved in renovating the main building of Chloe’s mansion.
The Coffee Shop Paris regulars include Yoshihiro Nozoe as Chōshū and Tarō Suwa as Handa. Guest cast members include Asami Usuda, Yūta Hayashi, Renn Kiriyama, and Yōhei Hayashida.
The mini-series will run for five episodes. Rikiya Imaizumi, known for live-action works including Teasing Master Takagi-san and 1122: For a Happy Marriage, is directing. He is also writing the scripts together with Kaori Imaizumi.
Why SEA fans should keep an eye on it
Amazon Prime Video’s worldwide release matters because Japanese live-action adaptations can sometimes be awkward to access legally in this region. When a show lands globally on a major platform, Malaysian fans do not need to wait for random licensing updates or hunt through region-locked services.
It is also another sign that manga-based dramas are becoming more accessible outside Japan, not just anime. For fans who enjoyed character-focused Japanese shows or adaptations of josei and shōjo-adjacent manga, Kuroema looks like the kind of title worth sampling when it drops.
The original manga launched in Kodansha’s Kiss magazine in August 2022, with its fourth compiled volume published in Japan on March 13. Creator Tsunami Umino is also known for The Full-Time Wife Escapist, which ran from 2012 to 2020, won the shōjo category at the 39th Kodansha Awards, and previously inspired a live-action TV series plus a later special.
Kuroema premieres on June 12 on Amazon Prime Video worldwide.
