Amazon Prime Video Japan has dropped a new trailer for the live-action mini-series adaptation of Tsunami Umino’s Kuroema Chole et Emma manga, and the big reveal this time is the show’s theme song.
The track is called “sign” and is performed by LAUSBUB. The trailer previews the song while giving fans a closer look at the mood of the series — a mix of messy adult life, strange living arrangements, fortune telling, and that slightly mysterious Japanese drama energy.
For Malaysian and SEA viewers, the important part is this: Kuroema will stream worldwide exclusively on Amazon Prime Video from June 12. No waiting around for a later regional release, no “Japan only first” situation. The mini-series will run for five episodes, so this looks like a compact watch rather than a long weekly commitment.
What is Kuroema about?
The story follows Emma, a 30-year-old woman whose life falls apart all at once. Her boyfriend breaks up with her, the company she works for collapses, and she loses her place to stay on the same day. That is already rough gila.
After wandering into a mansion, Emma meets Chloe, a rich and unusual heiress who lives by herself. Chloe initially lets Emma stay for just one night, but things take another turn when a fire breaks out at Chloe’s home. With both women pushed into an unexpected situation, they end up figuring out how to live together.
The setup later expands into fortune telling and mystery, when a customer visits Chloe’s fortune telling shop and pulls the two women into stranger circumstances.
Cast and characters
The newly listed cast includes Yōji Iwase as Kenshirō Shimon, the second-generation owner of Coffee Shop Paris who supports Chloe. Ken Mitsuishi plays Shingetsu Neisan, a famous and charismatic fortune teller.
Kai Inowaki appears as Shōta Mashū, an employee at an architectural design firm, while Aoba Kawai plays Rika Daian, an architect involved in renovating the main building of Chloe’s mansion.
The Coffee Shop Paris regulars also include Yoshihiro Nozoe as Chōshū and Tarō Suwa as Handa. Guest cast members include Asami Usuda, Yūta Hayashi, Renn Kiriyama, and Yōhei Hayashida.
Why this one is worth watching
Kuroema may not be the loudest anime-adjacent release on the calendar, but it has a few interesting things going for it. First, Tsunami Umino is not a random name. She is also known for The Full-Time Wife Escapist (Nigeru wa Haji da ga Yaku ni Tatsu), which ran from 2012 to 2020 and won the shojo category at the 39th Kodansha Awards.
That manga also received a live-action TV drama in Japan in 2016, followed by a special in 2020. So there is already a track record here for Umino’s work translating well into live-action drama.
The Kuroema Chole et Emma manga launched in Kodansha’s Kiss magazine in August 2022. Kodansha released the fourth compiled volume on March 13. For English readers, Kodansha USA Publishing releases Umino’s The Full-Time Wife Escapist digitally.
For Malaysian viewers who already use Prime Video for anime, Japanese films, or imported dramas, Kuroema could be an easy five-episode pickup in June. The premise has that relatable “life suddenly masuk longkang” hook, but with enough mystery and character drama to make it more than just another slice-of-life adaptation.
