Japan’s weekend box office is moving gila fast right now, and anime/game fans have plenty to watch. The Irregular at Magic High School THE MOVIE - Yotsuba Succession Arc - has entered the chart at #5, while Nintendo and Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has finally been pushed down from the top spot.
For Malaysian and SEA fans, this is the kind of ranking worth tracking because Japan’s theatrical momentum usually tells us which titles distributors, cinema chains, and fan communities will keep paying attention to. Even if not every release gets a smooth regional rollout, strong Japan numbers can keep hype alive for local screenings, fan events, merch, and streaming interest later.
Mario Galaxy drops, but still looks strong
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie fell from #1 to #2 in its third weekend in Japan. It still pulled in 341,000 tickets from Friday to Sunday, earning 490,061,280 yen, around US$3.10 million. Its Japan total now stands at 4.31 million tickets and 5,945,505,120 yen, around US$37.63 million.
That is still a very healthy run, especially for a game-to-film sequel. The movie previously opened at #1 in Japan with 1.121 million tickets sold and 1,601,093,600 yen, around US$9.96 million, across its first three days.
The film launched in the United States and United Kingdom on April 1, selected other territories on April 3, and Japan on April 24. The core creative team also remained familiar: Illumination’s Chris Meledandri and Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto returned as producers, with Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic directing again, Matthew Fogel back on screenplay duties, and Brian Tyler returning for the music.
Detective Conan refuses to slow down
Detective Conan: Highway no Datenshi, also known as Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway, held #3 in its fifth weekend. The 29th Conan film sold 288,000 tickets over the weekend and made 448,111,800 yen, around US$2.83 million.
Its overall run is even more ridiculous: 7.74 million tickets sold and 11,406,357,300 yen earned, around US$72.2 million. This also makes it the fourth Detective Conan film in a row to pass 10 billion yen, starting from 2023’s Black Iron Submarine.
The new movie focuses on Kanagawa Prefectural Police motorcycle division leader Chihaya Hagiwara, now voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro after the late Atsuko Tanaka. For Conan fans in Malaysia, this is another reminder that the franchise is not just “old anime nostalgia” — it remains a proper cinema monster in Japan.
Sakamoto Days stays in the fight
The live-action Sakamoto Days movie stayed at #4 in its second weekend. It sold 172,000 tickets and made 255,690,200 yen, around US$1.61 million, bringing its cumulative total to 1.34 million tickets and 1,858,426,100 yen, around US$11.76 million.
The film opened in Japan on April 29 and is also showing in ScreenX at 27 cinemas in Japan. Ren Meguro stars as Tarō Sakamoto, with Fumiya Takahashi as Shin Asakura. Yūichi Fukuda directed and wrote the script, while Keiya Tabuchi handled action direction.
Mahōka opens at #5
The big new anime entry this week is Mahōka Kōkō no Rettōsei: Yotsuba Keishō-hen, officially The Irregular at Magic High School THE MOVIE - Yotsuba Succession Arc -. It opened at #5 with about 89,000 tickets sold and 152,764,200 yen earned, around US$967,100, in its first three days.
Jimmy Stone directed the film at 8-Bit, with Taku Iwasaki composing the music. Tsutomu Satou is credited for the original story, and Kana Ishida for the original character designs. Returning cast members include Yūichi Nakamura as Tatsuya Shiba, Saori Hayami as Miyuki Shiba, Chiwa Saitō as Maya Yotsuba, and Emiri Katō as Fumiya Kuroba. New additions include Daisuke Ono as Katsushige Shibata and Ai Kayano as Yuuka Tsukuba.
Love Live also enters the chart
Love Live! Hasu no Sora Jogakuin School Idol Club Bloom Garden Party opened at #8, earning 100,312,570 yen, around US$635,000, in three days. The 3D anime film follows the final day before graduation for the 103rd class at Hasu no Sora Girls’ Academy.
Meanwhile, Cosmic Princess Kaguya!, Sound! Euphonium: The Final Movie Part 1, and the 2026 Doraemon movie all dropped off the top 10.
