Manga Mavericks Books had a pretty packed San Diego Comic-Con panel this week, and one announcement should be on the radar for manga readers who like smaller, more character-driven stories.
The publisher has licensed Rin Kawano’s Our Insignificant Justice — originally titled Toru ni Taranai Bokura no Seigi — and plans to release it in both print and digital formats in March 2027.
The manga follows the aftermath of a sudden disappearance. Sayoko Tano, a singer, vanishes one day without warning. For people outside her orbit, that might seem like a small news item. But for the fans, friends, and lovers who knew her, Sayoko was basically untouchable — almost like a living god.
Rather than telling the story from just one angle, Our Insignificant Justice connects the experiences of six different men and women linked to Sayoko. The setting moves between Tokyo and Miyazaki Prefecture, giving the manga a wider emotional and geographical scope instead of keeping everything locked to one city.
Rin Kawano first released the manga in January 2023. Manga Mavericks’ edition will be published in A5 size, measuring 5.83 x 8.27 inches.
For Malaysia and SEA readers, this is the kind of licensing news that matters if you’re tired of only seeing the same few blockbuster manga titles dominate shelves and online stores. Smaller manga often has the tougher journey: less marketing, harder discoverability, and sometimes painful import pricing if you want a physical copy. A print-and-digital release from a publisher focused on indie and niche works gives titles like this a better shot at reaching international readers legally and cleanly.
Manga Mavericks also gave an update on another title. The company will release the fifth chapter of Koukoku Brothers’ Divine Messengers and Demonic Guardians digitally on August 25, with a print release planned for a later date.
The bigger industry move, though, is Manga Mavericks’ new venture: the Independent Manga Alliance.
The alliance is being launched as an industry association and joint venture between Manga Mavericks CEO Varun Gupta and Mahjong Pros head of partnerships and licensing Harrison Doan. Its goal is to support independent creators and small publishers with distribution, marketing, and sales, while helping connect them with partner publishers and distributors in the United States and worldwide.
The founding members are Manga Mavericks Books, Mahjong Pros, Strict Algorithm LLC, Red String Manga, and Curation Entertainment Partners Inc.
That might sound like inside-baseball publishing stuff, but it could be genuinely useful for readers in our region. SEA manga fans are already used to hunting across Kinokuniya, local comic shops, Shopee, Lazada, digital platforms, and sometimes very expensive overseas shipping just to get certain English releases. If more indie publishers can plug into stronger distribution networks, it improves the odds that interesting non-mainstream manga becomes easier to find outside the US.
No cap, the manga scene is healthier when it is not just the biggest shonen machines getting all the oxygen. Our Insignificant Justice sounds like a quieter, more emotional read, while the Independent Manga Alliance could help more creators and small publishers get their work in front of global fans.
