Mari Makinami fans, this one is for the display shelf.
Good Smile Company has revealed that Evangelion Unit-08α will be the next entry in its Moderoid model kit line. This version is based on one of the Eva Unit-08 variants piloted by Mari Makinami Illustrious in the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, specifically the unit seen in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
The kit is scheduled to launch in Japan in October 2026 for ¥4,500. A US release is also planned for Q1 2027, priced at US$26.99. For Malaysian collectors, that roughly puts the base price around the RM120–RM135 range before shipping, taxes, proxy fees, or local hobby shop markups. In other words, don’t be surprised if the final landed price here sits higher, especially if you’re importing through Japan-based stores or reseller channels.
What Comes With The Unit-08α Kit?
The completed Moderoid Evangelion Unit-08α will stand at about 165mm, or roughly six and a half inches tall. It is an articulated plastic model kit, so this is not a fixed statue — you’ll be able to pose it, which matters a lot for an Eva design that looks best in dynamic action stances.
Good Smile Company is also including weapons associated with Mari’s Eva, including her sniper rifle. That is a pretty important part of the Unit-08α vibe, because Mari’s combat style across the Rebuild films often feels very different from Shinji, Asuka, or Rei’s more iconic Eva moments. She brings that chaotic “I know exactly what I’m doing, maybe” energy, and the rifle helps sell that look on a shelf.
As with many model kits, you’ll want proper tools for assembly. The source specifically notes that nippers are recommended, so beginners should not treat this like a simple snap-out toy. That said, painting is not strictly necessary. Good Smile Company is preparing some pre-painted parts, and stickers will be included for customisation, which makes the kit more approachable if you’re new to the hobby.
Why SEA Collectors Should Care
Evangelion merch has always had strong pull in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, especially among collectors who like mecha kits but don’t want to go all-in on Gunpla only. The Moderoid line sits in a nice middle ground: recognisable anime robots, manageable scale, and usually less intimidating than more complex premium kits.
For Malaysian fans, the main thing to watch is availability. Evangelion items can move fast depending on the character or unit, and Mari’s Eva designs don’t always get as much mainstream shelf space as Unit-01 or Unit-02. If local shops bring this in, it could be a cleaner buy than dealing with international shipping. But if you’re picky about first-batch availability, you may want to monitor Japanese pre-orders closer to the October 2026 release window.
This Unit-08α kit also joins other Evangelion Moderoid releases, including kits like Unit-01, so Good Smile Company is clearly building out the Eva lineup piece by piece. For collectors who like keeping a consistent scale and style across their shelf, that matters.
Evangelion is also staying active beyond model kits. The franchise has upcoming projects connected to it, including a new anime project involving Yoko Taro, and a related raid series in Final Fantasy XIV. So yes, even years after the Rebuild films wrapped, Eva still refuses to leave the cultural bloodstream — and honestly, we’re not complaining.
The Evangelion Unit-08α Moderoid model kit launches in Japan in October 2026, followed by the US in Q1 2027.
