Masakazu Suzuki’s crime manga Matorism is getting a fresh push in Japan, with Shinchosha’s Kurage Bunch platform set to launch a new Complete Edition on May 15.

This version is not just a simple re-upload of the old series. According to the announcement, the Complete Edition will include numerous revisions, which should make it interesting even for readers who already know the original run. For SEA manga fans who enjoy darker, more grounded stories — the kind that sit closer to crime drama than shonen power fantasy — this is one to keep on the radar.

Matorism originally launched in Nihonbungeisha’s Weekly Manga Goraku magazine back in 2017. The series wrapped up with its 10th and final volume in June 2020.

The manga follows narcotics agents, known as Matori, as they investigate drug-related crimes. The English edition is published digitally by emaqi under the title Matorism: Case Files of a Narcotics Agent. Its story focuses on agents Kusakabe and Saeki, who track cases involving substances like meth, marijuana, and MDMA while exposing the darker corners of modern society.

That premise alone makes Matorism stand out from the usual manga lineup. Drug crime is not exactly light reading, and for Malaysian and SEA readers, the subject matter hits a bit closer to home than your average fantasy dungeon arc. This region treats narcotics issues seriously, legally and socially, so a manga built around enforcement, addiction, and social fallout has a very different kind of weight.

Of course, this is still entertainment, not a textbook. But manga that tackles real-world problems through a crime-investigation lens can be compelling when done right. If the revisions sharpen the pacing, art, or storytelling, the Complete Edition could be a stronger entry point for readers who missed the original during its 2017-2020 run.

Suzuki is also involved in another upcoming Kurage Bunch title. He is handling composition for Kaigo to Hyena (Caregiving and Hyenas), written by Hironori Jinno and illustrated by Nozomi Ishizu. That manga is scheduled to launch on the same service on May 26.

For English-reading fans, emaqi is already publishing Suzuki’s Delinquents Can’t Cut Cake, created with writer Kōji Miyaguchi, so there is at least a path for international readers to check out more of his work.

For Malaysian manga fans looking beyond the usual anime-adapted hits, Matorism looks like the kind of gritty crime series worth sampling — especially if you prefer your manga with less magic sword nonsense and more uncomfortable social reality.
