Dōga Kōbō’s next original TV anime Mebius Dust is officially lining up for a July 2026 debut, and we finally have a clearer look at what this mysterious slice-of-life-looking project is cooking.

ASMIK Ace revealed the anime’s first episode preview, main cast, opening theme artist, and broadcast window on Thursday. The series is based on Hajime Shinagawa’s story of the same name, which won the grand prize in the “Kids/Game” category of the Project Anima competition back in 2019.

For anime fans in Malaysia and SEA, this is one to keep on the radar mainly because it is not another manga or light novel adaptation chasing an existing fanbase. Mebius Dust is an original anime, and those can either become hidden gems or disappear quietly if they do not land fast. With Dōga Kōbō involved, though, there is at least a solid reason to pay attention.

Main cast confirmed

The anime’s central trio has now been revealed:

  • Yuto Takenaka voices Araki, a high school student living in a downtown neighbourhood.
  • Nene Hieda voices Stella, Araki’s younger sister and also his classmate.
  • Haruka Satō voices Olga, the childhood friend of Araki and Stella.

The basic setup sounds very calm at first: three high school students spending their days playing games, stopping by the bathhouse, and heading home together in a warm local neighbourhood. But the way the premise is being framed suggests there may be something strange hiding underneath that everyday routine.

That is the interesting hook here. On paper, it has the vibes of a relaxed coming-of-age anime, but the title and Project Anima background hint that it may not stay that simple. If this turns into a “normal life with a weird twist” type series, it could be a nice weekly watch for fans who enjoy shows that slowly reveal their deeper layer.

One-cour anime, opening by Leo Ieiri

ASMIK Ace also confirmed that Mebius Dust will run for one cour, meaning it should air for roughly one quarter of the year. For Malaysian viewers who follow seasonal anime weekly, that likely puts it in the usual 12-to-13-episode zone, though the exact episode count was not stated.

The opening theme song will be “Mebius” by Leo Ieiri. That is a pretty fitting title choice, keeping the branding clean and direct. A strong opening can really help an original anime stick in people’s heads, especially during a packed summer season where new shows are fighting for attention every week.

Creative team behind the anime

Tarou Iwasaki is directing the series at Dōga Kōbō. His past credits include Baki the Grappler, Bibliophile Princess, and One Week Friends. Meanwhile, Yoriko Tomita is handling the series scripts. Her credits include The Elusive Samurai, both seasons of My Dress-Up Darling, and Senpai is an Otokonoko.

That script credit is probably the biggest green flag here. Tomita has experience with character-driven material, and if Mebius Dust is going to balance cosy daily life with something more unusual, the writing needs to carry the emotional weight without becoming messy.

Why Project Anima matters

Mebius Dust is also notable because it is the third anime to come from Project Anima’s winning entries. The initiative accepted public story submissions through platforms like DeNA’s MangaBox and Everystar, with competitions hosted across multiple categories by DeNA, Sotsu, Nippon Cultural Broadcasting, and MBS.

Previous Project Anima-related anime include Sakugan, which premiered in October 2021 after coming from the science-fiction/robot category, and Mahō Tsukai ni Narenakatta Onna no Ko no Hanashi, which premiered in October 2024 from the isekai/fantasy category.

Mebius Dust was originally expected sometime after 2020, so this July debut has been a long time coming. For SEA anime fans who like discovering original projects before they become mainstream conversation, this is exactly the kind of title worth sampling early.

Now the main question is simple: will Mebius Dust be a chill neighbourhood anime, a game-flavoured mystery, or something totally left-field? We’ll find out when it premieres this July.
