My Boyfriend in Orange Manga Is Ending After a Decade

Non Tamashima’s My Boyfriend in Orange is officially heading for its final chapter, closing the book on a shojo romance that has been running for around 10 years.

According to the June issue of Kodansha’s Dessert magazine, the manga will end in its next chapter, which is set to appear in the magazine’s September issue. That issue is scheduled to ship in July.

For readers who have been following the series digitally in English, this is a pretty big checkpoint. Kodansha USA Publishing releases My Boyfriend in Orange in English as a digital title, so Malaysian and SEA fans who prefer legal English releases should have a clear route to catch up without needing to hunt for random scans.

What is My Boyfriend in Orange about?

The series follows Moe, a high school student trying to adjust after moving to a new town following her father’s death. She is already struggling to fit into her new class when an awkward fire drill incident puts her in the spotlight: local firefighter Kyōsuke ends up “rescuing” her in front of everyone.

Painful? Confirm malu gila.

But that embarrassing moment becomes the start of something meaningful. Kyōsuke may seem rough around the edges, but his kindness helps Moe slowly step outside her comfort zone and move away from her loner life. From there, the manga leans into its firefighter romance hook — emotional recovery, first love, and that classic shojo mix of butterflies and drama.

It is not the loudest title in the romance manga scene, especially compared to the big anime-adapted names, but My Boyfriend in Orange has had a steady run. The manga first launched in Dessert back in May 2016, which means readers who started it in school could literally be working adults by the time it ends. That kind of long-term shojo run deserves respect, bro.

A long road to the finale

Kodansha released the manga’s 15th compiled volume in Japan in August 2025. Kodansha USA then published the English digital version of volume 15 on February 17.

The series also had a notable pause in its schedule. Tamashima placed the manga on hiatus in August 2022 due to her expected childbirth that fall. Serialization later resumed in May 2024, making this upcoming ending feel less like a sudden cancellation and more like the final stretch after a delayed but deliberate return.

For Malaysian manga fans, especially those who follow shojo through digital platforms rather than physical Japanese magazines, the main thing to watch now is how quickly the final chapter and eventual final compiled volume reach English release. Digital-first manga is usually easier for SEA readers than waiting for physical imports, but availability and timing can still vary depending on storefronts and regional access.

The series also reached live-action fans

My Boyfriend in Orange is not only a manga title. It also received a live-action film adaptation, which opened in Japan in July 2022. The movie ranked at #4 during its opening weekend.

That live-action angle matters because romance manga often finds a second audience through films and dramas, especially among viewers who may not read every monthly chapter. In SEA, where Japanese live-action romance films still have a niche but loyal audience, the ending of the manga could renew interest in both the original series and its movie version.

So if you have been putting this one off, now is probably the time to start catching up. A completed shojo romance is always easier to recommend — no painful waiting, no “when will the next chapter drop?” stress, just the full emotional ride from awkward first meeting to final payoff.
