My Hero Academia fans may need to accept the big truth: the main anime might not have much canon story left to adapt.
According to ComicBook Anime, the series has already covered Kohei Horikoshi’s available material, including the extra chapter and one-shot. The main anime wrapped in December last year, then followed up with an extra episode and an anime short as part of the franchise’s 10th anniversary celebration.
So if you were waiting for a surprise new season announcement, temper expectations sikit. The source notes that Horikoshi currently does not plan to continue My Hero Academia, though fans may still get occasional visuals or updates from him in the future.
Instead, Horikoshi seems to be moving forward creatively. His new one-shot, Quit Laughing, Shijima, reportedly went viral thanks to his art and story direction, with fans already hoping to see more from him outside Deku’s world.
But for fans who still want more of the MHA universe, there is already one very obvious answer: My Hero Academia: Vigilantes.
Why Vigilantes Matters Now
Vigilantes is an official spin-off set five years before the events of the main My Hero Academia story. The manga is written by Hideyuki and illustrated by Court Betten, and it concluded back in 2022.
The anime adaptation premiered last year and has released two seasons so far. However, a third season has not been officially confirmed, even though Season 2 ended in March this year.
The story follows Koichi Haimawari, a college student who once wanted to become a hero but ended up living a normal life because his quirk was not considered strong enough. Things change when he meets a vigilante who helps people from the shadows without a proper hero licence.
From there, Koichi gets pulled into a bigger conflict involving dangerous criminal forces. It is not just a side quest for fun; the spin-off expands the same hero society that made the original series so interesting.
Familiar Faces, New Angles
Even though Vigilantes focuses on a different protagonist, it still connects back to characters fans already care about. Aizawa, All Might, and Midnight appear in the series, while Aizawa also gets additional backstory.
The spin-off also features All For One operating from the shadows before his larger role in the main story becomes fully visible. That alone makes Vigilantes feel more important than a random bonus project.
The key point: ComicBook Anime says Vigilantes is considered canon because it takes place in the same world. So for fans who care about the official timeline, this is not filler fluff.
Analysis: Why SEA Fans Should Pay Attention
For Malaysia and SEA anime fans, this matters because My Hero Academia has been one of the most recognisable modern shonen franchises for years. If the main anime is truly out of canon runway, Vigilantes becomes the cleanest way to stay in that universe without forcing a sequel that does not exist yet.
It also hits a slightly different flavour. Instead of another school-based hero journey, Vigilantes looks at people operating outside the official system. That angle may actually feel fresh for viewers who already know Deku’s story inside out.
No cap, if you skipped Vigilantes because it looked like “just a spin-off,” this might be the time to reconsider. With the main series already reaching its conclusion, the prequel could end up being the most meaningful MHA anime left on the table.
