Nao Emoto’s New Fantasy Manga Gives a Magic-Less Sage the Spotlight

Square Enix is already moving fast with Shinkoshoto’s newest fantasy story. Nao Emoto has launched a manga adaptation of Maryoku Zero no Saikyō Kenja ~Mahō Riron o Kiwametara, Sekai Saikyō ni Natteita~, which roughly translates to The Strongest Sage With Zero Magic Power ~Once I Advanced Magical Theory, I Became the Strongest~.

The manga debuted on May 1 through Square Enix’s Manga UP! online manga service, with the platform’s official website and X/Twitter account announcing the launch.

The setup is very “fantasy light novel”, but with a nice twist: the lead character, Nayton Magius, comes from a famous mage family but has zero talent for using magic himself. Instead of giving up, he stays obsessed with magic from the research side. Thanks to his father’s introduction, Nayton enters the elite Magical Division, where he pushes magical theory so far that he starts bending the rules of the system itself.

Basically, this is not the usual “born overpowered” route. It is more of a “no mana, all brain” fantasy power climb — and honestly, that angle could be fun if the manga leans into problem-solving instead of just another cheat-skill flex.

For Malaysian and SEA manga readers, the interesting part is the timing. Shinkoshoto only started the original web novel on Shōsetsuka ni Narō on January 15, with the latest chapter listed on February 16. Square Enix is publishing the first print novel volume on May 7, featuring illustrations by kodamazon. That means Emoto’s manga version actually arrived before the printed novel volume hit shelves.

That is quite aggressive, but not shocking when you look at Shinkoshoto’s track record. He is the writer behind The Strongest Sage With the Weakest Crest and Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life, both of which received TV anime adaptations in 2022. Square Enix Manga & Books also publishes the manga versions of those titles in English.

On top of that, several other Shinkoshoto manga adaptations are already available digitally in English through services like Manga UP! Global and Comikey, including titles such as Killer Alchemist -Assassinations in Another World-, My Adventurer Life, Dualing Fighters, Anything’s Possible with Ultimate Alchemy, I Think I’ll Cheat to Become a Spellsword in Another World, and The Unrivaled Reincarnated Sage of Another World.

No English release for this new manga has been announced in the source material, but given how much of Shinkoshoto’s catalogue is already circulating through global digital platforms, SEA readers who follow fantasy manga on mobile should probably keep an eye on it.

Emoto is also not a random pickup. She previously drew O Maidens in Your Savage Season with Mari Okada, a manga that ran from 2016 to 2019 and later inspired a 2019 TV anime. Kodansha USA released that series in English. Emoto also handled the manga adaptation of the Josee, The Tiger and the Fish anime film, where she served as character designer, and Yen Press licensed that manga.

Her other credits include Forget Me Not, inspired by Mag Hsu’s Taiwanese novel Mǎzimen, and the manga version of NisiOisin’s Shin Honkaku Mahō Shōjo Risuka, which ended in December 2024.

So yes, the title is extremely long — classic fantasy manga behaviour lah — but the creative pairing is worth noting. Shinkoshoto brings the proven “sage fantasy” pipeline, while Emoto has the character-drama chops to make Nayton feel like more than just another genius with a gimmick.
