Netflix’s Korean live-action series Spooky in Love is making the jump into webtoon territory — and honestly, this is the kind of cross-media move that makes total sense for SEA fans.
The series has received an official webtoon adaptation, which launched on Naver Webtoon on July 17. New chapters are being released weekly, so this is not just a one-off promo comic. An international rollout across seven countries is also planned for mid-August, though the specific countries have not been listed yet.
For Malaysian and SEA readers, that timing is worth watching. Naver Webtoon and similar platforms already have a strong following here, especially among fans who jump between K-dramas, manhwa, anime, and romance fantasy stories like it’s all one big watchlist. If the rollout includes this region, Spooky in Love could become one of those titles where fans follow both the Netflix version and the weekly comic updates side by side.
The story itself has a pretty fun hook. Spooky in Love is based on the 2011 film Spellbound, and follows Yeo-ri Chun, a wealthy heiress who can see ghosts. She ends up crossing paths with Kang-wook Ma, a fiery prosecutor who is absolutely terrified of ghosts. That contrast sets up the series as an occult romance — part supernatural mystery, part unlikely pairing, part ghostly chaos.
The live-action version stars Eun-bin Park and Se-jong Yang, giving the Netflix series some serious drama appeal right out of the gate. Park Eun-bin especially has strong name recognition among K-drama fans, so it is not surprising that the show managed to make noise quickly.
On Netflix, Spooky in Love debuted on July 18. According to Netflix Tudum’s non-English shows chart, the series ranked at No. 8 for the week of July 13-19, pulling in 1.7 million views. That is a solid debut-week signal, especially considering how crowded Netflix’s non-English drama space has become.
The webtoon adaptation is interesting because it gives the franchise more room to breathe. Live-action shows have to move fast, but webtoons can linger on character moments, expand side stories, and lean harder into the supernatural visuals. For fans who like the premise but want more detail, the comic version could become the better companion experience.
This also fits a bigger trend: Korean entertainment is no longer staying in one lane. A film can become a drama, a drama can become a webtoon, and a webtoon can later inspire another adaptation. For SEA audiences, especially younger fans in Malaysia who already consume Netflix, manga, manhwa, and anime in the same daily rotation, Spooky in Love feels built for that behaviour.
No word yet on whether the international webtoon rollout will include Malaysia or other SEA markets, but if it does, this one is worth keeping on your radar — especially if you’re into supernatural romance with a bit of comedy and ghost panic on the side.
