Netflix’s Live-Action G'day Adaptation Casts Ryu Jun-yeol as Lead

Netflix is moving ahead with another webtoon adaptation, and this one has a pretty interesting lead. According to Korean entertainment outlet Xports News, Ryu Jun-yeol has been cast in Netflix’s upcoming live-action series Outback, which is based on Yong Sung Choi’s mystery thriller webtoon G'day.

For fans who keep up with Korean comics and streaming releases, this is one to watch. Webtoon adaptations are already a big deal across Asia, but when Netflix gets involved, the reach becomes way bigger, especially for viewers in Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia where K-dramas, Korean thrillers, and webtoon-based series already have a strong audience.

What we know so far

Here are the key details currently confirmed:

  • Ryu Jun-yeol will star in the series
  • The live-action adaptation is titled Outback
  • It is based on G'day, a mystery thriller webtoon by Yong Sung Choi
  • The original webtoon was serialized on Lezhin Comics from 2015 to 2017
  • No release date has been announced yet

One detail that stands out is Ryu’s role. He will play Hans, a character who was portrayed as a villain in the original webtoon. According to the report, the live-action version is expected to reinterpret that role for the screen. That does not automatically mean Hans will be completely changed, but it does suggest Netflix is not doing a straight panel-for-panel copy.

Honestly, that could be a good thing. The jump from webtoon to live action usually works better when a series adjusts character writing for pacing, tone, and performance rather than trying to force the exact same beats. For thriller material especially, a stronger or more layered screen version of a villain can make a huge difference.

Why Malaysian and SEA viewers should care

For local audiences, this is another reminder that the webtoon-to-screen pipeline is still super strong. If you’ve been following how Korean IP moves from digital comics to mainstream streaming, this is exactly the kind of project that matters. Netflix titles tend to land fast across the region, so there’s a good chance Malaysian viewers will be able to jump in as soon as the series is ready.

It also fits a viewing trend we see a lot in SEA right now: fans want thrillers with familiar K-drama production values, but they also want source material with an existing fanbase. That mix usually creates more online discussion, more theory posts, and more curiosity from casual viewers who may not have read the original.

If you’re the type who likes checking out the source before the adaptation drops, the English version of G'day is available on Lezhin. That gives fans here a chance to see how Hans is handled in the original story before Netflix puts its own spin on him.

For now, the biggest missing piece is the release window. Netflix has not locked in a date yet, so this is still an early-stage announcement. But with Ryu Jun-yeol attached and a mystery thriller webtoon as the foundation, Outback already feels like a project worth keeping on the radar.
