Netflix has shown off the main trailer and key art for its upcoming Japanese live-action adaptation of Viral Hit, and this one looks properly messy in the best way.
The series, based on the popular Korean webtoon also known in Japan as Kenka Dokugaku, is set to premiere globally on Netflix on June 11. For Malaysian and SEA fans who already follow webtoon-to-anime adaptations, this is one to keep on the radar — especially if you like underdog stories, school violence drama, and the very modern chaos of chasing clout online.
A bullied teen turns street fights into content
The trailer focuses on Kota Shimura, a high school student dealing with bullying and financial hardship. Pushed into a corner, Kota starts learning how to fight by himself and eventually becomes known through live-streamed street fights.
That hook is very Viral Hit: physical fights, internet fame, and the ugly side of attention economy all mixed together. The footage also teases the strange mentor figure wearing a chicken mask, which fans of the original will immediately recognise as one of the story’s most memorable elements.
It is not just a simple “weak kid becomes strong” setup. The appeal is how the series connects fighting with online culture — views, humiliation, popularity, and monetisation. For SEA audiences, where livestream drama and influencer culture are already everywhere, the premise hits pretty close to home.
Main cast and new names revealed
Ōji Suzuka leads the series as Kota Shimura, while Meru Nukumi plays heroine Kaho Asamiya.
Netflix also confirmed more cast members, including:
- Noritaka Hamao as MMA talent Tatsuya Ogi
- Kentarō Maeda as taekwondo rival Reo Shinjo
- Yūsuke Iseya as underground promoter Yugo Kuwata
- Nana Asakawa as influencer Rumi
- Gaku Sano as a shady entertainment industry figure
Veteran actors Gitan Ōtsuru and Tsurutarō Kataoka are also joining as Kaho’s father and Aki’s father. Mieko Harada plays Kota’s mother, Miyuki.
Previously announced cast members include Ai Mikami, Araki Sugō, and Takurō Osada.
The new key visual puts Kota front and centre with his fist raised, joined by major characters such as Aki Yashio, Kanegon, and Kaho. Very “we’re about to get punched emotionally and physically” energy, bro.
Why Viral Hit matters for anime and webtoon fans
The original webtoon launched in Korea in November 2019, with the English version arriving on WEBTOON in October 2020. In Japan, it runs through LINE Manga.
The numbers are huge: the webtoon has reached 2.28 billion global views, while in Japan alone it has passed 500 million views since serialisation began there in 2020. It also received a TV anime adaptation in 2024, with Crunchyroll streaming the series.
That makes this Netflix live-action version part of a bigger trend: Korean webtoons becoming global anime and live-action properties, then finding even more audiences through platforms like Netflix and Crunchyroll. For Malaysia, where fans often jump between anime, K-drama, J-drama, manga, and webtoons without caring about borders, Viral Hit sits right in that sweet spot.
If Netflix nails the fight choreography and keeps the social-media pressure feeling nasty instead of cartoonish, this could be a solid binge for June. If it goes too clean, though, it may lose the raw edge that made the original webtoon stand out.
Either way, June 11 is the date to mark.
Fans can read the English version of the original webtoon on WEBTOON.
