Netflix animation fans, we have a new chart monster to watch.
KPop Demon Hunters has been the big animated flex on Netflix for a while now. The Sony Pictures animated movie, led by Mira, Zoey, and Rumi, is still Netflix’s most-watched movie overall. Huntrix basically became a streaming phenomenon, and with a sequel already expected somewhere down the line, the fandom has not exactly gone quiet.
But now Swapped, Netflix’s latest animated original film, has done something genuinely impressive: it beat KPop Demon Hunters in weekly views.
According to the reported Netflix numbers, Swapped pulled 38.7 million views from May 4 to May 10. That makes it the biggest single week for any Netflix film so far. For context, KPop Demon Hunters never crossed that weekly peak, with its best week landing a little above 30 million views.
That does not mean Swapped has already taken the all-time crown. Important distinction, bro. KPop Demon Hunters is still Netflix’s most-watched movie in platform history. But Swapped now has the kind of early momentum that makes people ask whether it could eventually challenge Huntrix’s total.
The movie stars Michael B. Jordan and Juno Temple, with the story built around a body-swap misadventure. Body-swap comedy is not exactly new, but on Netflix, a simple high-concept animated film can travel fast if families, casual viewers, and animation fans all click at the same time.
For Malaysia and SEA viewers, this is worth watching for one big reason: Netflix animation is becoming event content now, not just background viewing. KPop Demon Hunters hit especially hard because it blended pop idol energy, supernatural action, and a fandom-ready girl group setup. That is very easy for SEA audiences to latch onto, especially in markets where K-pop, anime aesthetics, and animated fantasy already overlap hard.
Swapped beating its weekly record shows that Netflix can still launch a fresh animated movie and make it explode quickly, even without years of franchise baggage. If you are the type who checks Netflix Top 10 before deciding what to watch with your siblings or Discord gang, expect this one to keep showing up.
Meanwhile, Huntrix fans still have a long wait ahead. The KPop Demon Hunters sequel is reportedly most likely arriving in 2029, so Netflix has plenty of time to keep the brand alive. The streamer is also said to be eyeing a bigger franchise play, with talk of possible live-action, a TV series, a worldwide concert tour, and more. Internally, it has reportedly been compared to Netflix’s own version of Frozen, which tells you how big they think this can get.
As for the sequel itself, the story is still under wraps. Producer Michelle Wong previously said she would like to explore more of Mira and Zoey’s backgrounds, and even more of Derpy and Sussie’s relationship. That makes sense because the first movie left hints about Zoey and Mira without fully digging into them.
So yes, Swapped has landed a clean weekly win. But the bigger fight is still the all-time race. KPop Demon Hunters has the cultural staying power. Swapped has the hot start. Now we see whether it has legs, or whether Huntrix remains Netflix’s animated boss fight.
