The Nippon Sangoku: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun anime has revealed two more voice actors, and if you’re following this political-war drama on Prime Video, this is one more reason to keep it on your radar.

The latest cast update confirms Ryōta Takeuchi as Gō Sugō, while Shunsuke Takeuchi will voice Shiryō Nagamine. Both additions were announced by the anime’s staff on Tuesday.

For Malaysian and SEA anime fans, the bigger win here is accessibility. Amazon Prime Video started streaming the series on April 5 across more than 240 countries and territories, with Prime Video handling exclusive distribution outside Japan. So yes, this is not one of those shows where we need to wait months, dodge spoilers, or hunt around random platforms just to keep up.

Based on Ikka Matsuki’s Nippon Sangoku manga, the series takes place in a future Japan that has collapsed after nuclear conflict, natural disasters, and rotten leadership. The country is split into three rival powers, creating a modern take on a Three Kingdoms-style struggle for control.

At the centre of the story is Aoteru Misumi, a low-profile local government worker who decides Japan needs to be united again. Instead of being some typical overpowered swordsman, his weapons are knowledge, strategy, and serious speaking skills. Basically, this is the kind of anime where the real fight may be won in council rooms before anyone even reaches the battlefield.

That setup is what makes Nippon Sangoku interesting for viewers who enjoy shows with political manoeuvring, war tactics, and slow-burn power climbs. If you’re into anime like Kingdom, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, or the more strategic side of Vinland Saga, this one sounds like it is playing in that same brainy war-drama lane.

The production team is also pretty stacked. Kazuaki Terasawa, who worked on The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 and the Tatsuki Fujimoto 17-26 episode “Woke-Up-as-a-Girl Syndrome,” is directing the anime at Studio Kafka. Character designs are handled by Takahiko Abiru, known for work on The Ancient Magus’ Bride and Vinland Saga, and he is also serving as chief animation director.

On scripts, Teruko Utsumi is leading series composition, with credits including Salaryman’s Club, Sarazanmai, and You and I Are Polar Opposites. Seiki Tamura is the art director, while Kevin Penkin is composing the music. That last name should perk up a lot of ears — Penkin’s work on Made in Abyss, The Apothecary Diaries, and Tower of God has serious atmosphere.

The opening theme is “Hidane” by Tatsuya Kitani, while Leina performs the ending theme “Chikai.”

In Japan, the anime had an early airing on U-NEXT on April 6 before its TV broadcast on Tokyo MX, BS NTV, and other channels. The original manga began in 2021 on Shogakukan’s Manga ONE app and Ura Sunday website, with the seventh compiled volume released on April 10.

The manga has already picked up industry attention too. It appeared in Da Vinci magazine’s 23rd “Book of the Year” list, earned a nomination at the 16th Manga Taisho Awards in 2023, and ranked among the top 20 manga for male readers in the 2023 edition of Kono Manga ga Sugoi!

For SEA viewers, Nippon Sangoku is worth watching not just because it is available easily, but because it offers something different from the usual seasonal fantasy rush. Political anime can be hit or miss, but with this staff, music team, and premise, this one has a proper chance to cook.
