A new manga-to-anime project has entered the chat: Tomo Nagawa’s Omae, Tanuki ni Naranee ka?, also known in English as Would You Like to Be a Tanuki?, is officially getting a TV anime adaptation.
Production company Happinet has launched the anime’s official website, using the reveal to drop the first batch of key details. That includes the main staff, a teaser visual, and a teaser promotional video — basically the usual “yes, this is real” starter pack before casting, broadcast window, and streaming details arrive later.
For now, the project has not announced a release date, so jangan rush your seasonal watchlist yet. But the creative team is already worth noting.
Main staff revealed
The anime will be directed by Jun Kamiya, who previously worked on Kingdom. Series composition and script duties go to Masaki Wachi, known for Garo: Guren no Tsuki. Character designs are handled by Shin Takemoto, who worked as an animation director on Love All Play, while the music will be composed by Minako Seki, whose credits include Black Clover.
Animation production is listed under Nippon Animation, a name with deep history in Japanese TV anime. That alone does not guarantee the final product will be a banger, of course — execution still matters — but it does make this one a little more interesting than a random no-name adaptation announcement.
Why SEA anime fans should keep an eye on it
For Malaysian and SEA viewers, this looks like the kind of title that could slip under the radar if you only follow the huge shounen or isekai announcements. But that is also exactly why it might be worth watching.
Not every season needs to be filled with power-scaling, demon kings, and 12 reincarnated office workers. Sometimes the smaller manga adaptations end up becoming the comfy surprise pick — the kind of show people start recommending halfway through the season with “bro, you need to watch this, trust.”
The tanuki angle also gives it a very Japanese folklore flavour, which can land nicely for viewers who enjoy anime with a more whimsical or character-driven identity. SEA fans have generally been open to these quieter titles, especially when they become easy weekly watches on regional streaming platforms.
That said, no streaming platform has been confirmed in the source information yet. Malaysian fans should keep an eye on the usual regional anime channels and services once the production shares broadcast details.
What we still don’t know
The big missing pieces are still the premiere window, voice cast, and platform availability. The teaser PV and visual are just the first step, so expect more updates once the anime moves deeper into promotion mode.
For now, Omae, Tanuki ni Naranee ka? joins the growing list of manga adaptations lining up for future anime seasons. It may not be the loudest announcement of the week, but with a distinct title, experienced staff, and Nippon Animation attached, this one has enough going for it to stay on the watchlist.
