Japanese voice actor Wakana Yamazaki has died at the age of 61, leaving behind a career that touched some of anime and gaming’s biggest franchises.

Her agency, Aoni Productions, confirmed that Yamazaki had been receiving treatment for an illness. She died on April 18, 2026. According to the agency, her wake and funeral were held privately with close family members, following the wishes of her family.

For many anime fans, Yamazaki’s name is tied to One Piece, where she voiced Nojiko, a key character connected to Nami’s backstory. Nojiko was not part of the Straw Hat Pirates’ main crew, but her role mattered a lot in giving emotional weight to Nami’s journey. If you remember early One Piece for its heavier, more personal arcs, Nojiko was one of those characters who helped make that hit properly.

But Yamazaki’s legacy goes way beyond One Piece. She also had major roles across long-running and legendary series including Detective Conan / Case Closed, Dragon Ball, Mobile Suit Gundam, Sailor Moon, and Lupin the 3rd. For SEA fans, especially Malaysians who grew up jumping between anime TV blocks, DVDs, fan subs, and now streaming platforms, that list is basically a whole era of anime culture.

Detective Conan creator Gosho Aoyama also paid tribute after the news broke, saying he was deeply saddened that he would no longer hear Yamazaki’s gentle and comforting voice. It is the kind of comment that says a lot about how close voice actors can become to the identity of a character, especially in a franchise that has been part of fans’ lives for decades.

Yamazaki’s work also reached gamers. She voiced characters in titles such as Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, Battle Arena Toshinden, Xenosaga, and Dragon Force. Team Ninja shared condolences as well, honouring her long-running contribution as Ayane in the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series.

That gaming connection is worth highlighting because for a lot of Malaysian and SEA fans, anime and games have always overlapped. One weekend you are watching One Piece or Detective Conan, the next you are grinding a fighting game or action title with the same familiar Japanese voice talent behind it. Yamazaki was part of that shared pop-culture memory, even for fans who may not have known her name immediately.

Her passing is a reminder that anime is not just built by studios, directors, and big-name manga creators. The emotional pull often comes from the voices that make characters feel alive. Whether it was Nojiko in One Piece, her long career in Detective Conan, or her game work with Team Ninja, Wakana Yamazaki leaves behind a body of work that will continue to be heard by fans across generations.
