Netflix has finally put a launch window on The One Piece, the new anime remake from Wit Studio: February 2027, worldwide.

For Malaysian and SEA fans, that means no waiting for staggered regional releases, no dodgy upload hunting, no “eh bro, where can watch?” drama. The first season is planned to drop on Netflix globally with all seven episodes available, giving fans a proper binge-watch entry point into the early days of Luffy’s journey.

Seven episodes, around 300 minutes

According to the announcement, Season 1 will run for about 300 minutes across seven episodes and retell material from the first 50 chapters of Eiichiro Oda’s manga. That places the remake right at the foundation of the series, beginning with the classic East Blue-era story that introduced the Straw Hat crew and made One Piece such a monster franchise in the first place.

The remake was first revealed during Jump Festa ’24 in December 2023 as part of the anime’s 25th anniversary celebration. At the time, the project was described as adapting the story starting from the East Blue Saga, though it has not been confirmed whether the first season will go beyond that arc.

Still, seven episodes and 300 minutes is already an interesting signal. That is roughly movie-length pacing spread across a compact season, which could make this a much easier starting point for new fans who feel intimidated by the original anime’s massive episode count.

Why Wit Studio’s version matters

Wit Studio is not a small name. This is the studio associated with heavy hitters like Attack on Titan, SPY x FAMILY, and Vinland Saga, so expectations are naturally high.

Production I.G president and Wit Studio president George Wada previously said the remake is aiming for tighter storytelling without the kind of padding that long-running weekly anime can sometimes suffer from. He also mentioned that the team wants the new version to carry the strength and polish of Wit’s late-night anime work, while still respecting Toei Animation’s original One Piece adaptation.

That balance is important. Toei’s One Piece anime is iconic, no debate. For a lot of Malaysian fans, it was part of growing up with anime on TV, fansubs, streaming, and later Netflix. But the original series has also become a huge commitment for newcomers. A modern remake with cleaner pacing could become the “just start here lah” version for younger viewers.

The original anime is also changing pace

This remake is happening while Toei’s long-running One Piece anime is also adjusting its production rhythm. Starting in 2026, the main anime is reducing its yearly output to a maximum of 26 episodes.

The goal, according to Toei, is to allow episodes to include more manga content and improve the overall tempo while still using animation in ways the manga cannot. After years of airing almost weekly since 1999, this is a big shift for the franchise.

The anime had already taken a production break after the Egghead arc, then returned in Japan on April 5 with the start of the Elbaph arc. During the Egghead break, One Piece Log: Fish-Man Island Saga, a 21-episode improved and condensed version of the Fish-Man Island arc, aired in its place.

One Piece is everywhere right now

Netflix is clearly going hard on One Piece as a global franchise. The second live-action season, One Piece: Into the Grand Line, debuted on March 10, with the first two episodes also screened in selected theaters in Canada, the United States, and Japan. A third live-action season is set for 2027, and an animated Lego special is also planned for September 29.

For SEA fans, this remake could be a big gateway moment. One Piece has always been popular here, but asking someone to catch up on over a thousand episodes is gila intimidating. A slick, globally available Netflix remake from Wit Studio could pull in casual anime fans, younger viewers, and even live-action-only fans who want to see what the hype is really about.

If Wit nails the pacing, emotion, and adventure of early One Piece, February 2027 could be the start of a whole new wave of Straw Hat fans in Malaysia.
