Japan’s “pitiful cute” character wave is moving into anime properly, and yes, this one could matter for SEA fans who live on character merch, LINE stickers, and chaotic short-form clips.
SKY Perfect Pictures has announced that creator Kawaisouni!’s Opanchu Usagi and Npochamu characters are getting a new 3D anime titled Kawaisouni! Theater. The anime will be shown inside ZIP!, NTV’s morning programme in Japan, and the staff are also planning for it to stream globally.
That global streaming part is the key thing for Malaysian and SEA viewers. For now, no platform has been named, so don’t go checking your Netflix or Crunchyroll queue yet. But if the plan happens, this could be one of those easy-to-watch character anime that spreads fast outside Japan — especially because Opanchu Usagi already feels built for meme culture.
Who are Opanchu Usagi and Npochamu?
Opanchu Usagi is a strange little Earth-dwelling creature known for “pitiful cuteness” — basically the kind of character who keeps trying their best, fails constantly, and somehow becomes more lovable because of it. If you’ve seen Japanese character goods that look cute but also a bit emotionally damaged, this is that energy.
The character is not some random niche mascot either. Opanchu Usagi ranked first in Japan’s Popular Character Ranking Chosen by Teen Girls for two years straight: in 2024, where it tied with Chiikawa, and again in 2025.
Npochamu, meanwhile, is a yogurt fairy who ends sentences with “chamu.” Npochamu also has a dependable friend named Kimimaro, who quickly steps in whenever Npochamu gets into trouble. Npochamu ranked third in the same 2024 teen girls character ranking, so clearly Kawaisouni! has more than one hit mascot in the bag.
Why SEA fans should keep an eye on this
In Malaysia, we’ve already seen how fast Japanese character culture travels. Chiikawa, Sanrio, Pokémon, and other mascot-style IPs move through merch drops, cafe collabs, gachapon, phone cases, plushies, and TikTok edits long before some people even watch the actual anime.
Opanchu Usagi fits that lane perfectly. It has the kind of simple design and very specific emotional comedy that works even if you don’t know the full lore. If the 3D anime gets accessible global streaming, expect more people here to discover the character properly — and if the hype grows, don’t be surprised if local anime shops, import sellers, and event booths start pushing more Opanchu Usagi and Npochamu goods.
Who is making it?
Kawaisouni! is handling the script for the anime, which is a good sign if you want the original character humour to stay intact.
Animation production is by Marza Animation Planet, a studio with credits including two seasons of Chi’s Sweet Adventure, Lupin III THE FIRST, and the Resident Evil: Vendetta film. SKY Perfect Pictures and NTV are producing the project.
No international release date, streaming service, or episode format has been confirmed yet. For now, the main takeaway is simple: one of Japan’s most popular modern character brands is getting a proper 3D anime push, and the team already has global viewers in mind.
