Patlabor EZY Brings Back Shigeru Chiba as Shigeo Shiba

Shigeru Chiba is officially back in Patlabor EZY, and for long-time mecha fans, this one hits different.

The veteran voice actor will reprise his role as Shigeo Shiba, a character he has voiced since the original Patlabor anime era nearly four decades ago. For a franchise built on old-school mechanical grit, police procedure, and very human workplace chaos, bringing Chiba back is a strong signal that EZY is not trying to throw away its roots.

Patlabor EZY will run for eight episodes, but its release format is a bit unusual. Instead of launching as a normal weekly TV anime, the series will first be shown theatrically as three films. File 1 opens on May 15, while File 2 follows on August 14. Together, those first two films cover the opening six episodes in an omnibus style, with standalone stories. File 3 arrives in March 2027 and will package the final two episodes as one connected two-part story.

The new story moves Patlabor into the 2030s, where Japan is dealing with labour shortages and heavier automation powered by AI. That setup is very on-brand for Patlabor: the franchise has always been about giant machines, yes, but also the messy society around them. In this era, the piloted Labors that once felt futuristic are now normal tools, and even those are being pushed aside by autonomous robots.

That makes the return of SV-2 extra interesting. Their mission is still to stop Labor-related crimes, but now they are operating in a world where old piloted mecha are competing with newer automation. Their machine of choice is the AV-98Plus Ingram, an upgraded version of the classic AV-98 Ingram. In-universe, the frame has been around for almost 40 years and some officers apparently call it an “old piece of junk” — but the Plus model gets improved mechanical systems, software updates, and a pilot helmet with augmented reality displays.

For Malaysian and SEA anime fans, this is the kind of reboot/sequel project worth watching closely. Patlabor is not as mainstream with younger viewers as Gundam or Evangelion, but it is one of those legacy mecha titles that influenced how anime treats robots as part of everyday life, not just flashy war machines. With AI and automation becoming real conversations across Southeast Asia too, the 2030s setting could feel surprisingly relevant if the writing lands.

The previously revealed cast includes Sumire Uesaka as Ingram-01 pilot Towa Kuga, Kikunosuke Toya as Ingram-01 commander Kippei Atori, Ami Koshimizu as Ingram-02 commander Saki Hirata, and Chikahiro Kobayashi as Ingram-02 pilot Akihiko Hazama. Megumi Hayashibara also joins as SV-2 captain Kimika Saeki, which is another heavyweight name for older anime fans.

Behind the scenes, the staff is loaded with franchise history. Original Patlabor mechanical designer Yutaka Izubuchi is directing at J.C. Staff, while Kazunori Itō handles the script and Patlabor creator Masami Yuuki is on character design. Kenji Kawai, whose music is a huge part of the franchise’s identity, returns as composer. CG production is handled by GAZEN, with HEADGEAR credited for the original story.

The theme songs are also confirmed: Mori Calliope performs the opening theme “Reimei Compass,” while Mariko Nagai performs the ending theme “Baton.”

Patlabor EZY has been in the works for a long time. GENCO first revealed the project at the MIFA film market during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2017. A pilot debuted in 2022 and later screened with the 35th anniversary revival of Patlabor: The Movie in 2024.

No SEA theatrical or streaming release details were included in the announcement, so Malaysian fans will have to wait and see where it lands. But if you love grounded mecha, police drama, or just want something with actual old-school anime DNA, keep this one on your radar.
