Patlabor EZY is moving into its next case file, and mecha fans finally have a fresh look at what is coming.
The official site for the new Patlabor EZY anime has released the full trailer and key visual for File 2, the project’s second compilation film. This instalment will bundle episodes 4 to 6 of the anime and is scheduled to open in Japan on August 14.
For long-time Patlabor fans, this is not just another nostalgia play. EZY pushes the franchise into the 2030s, where Japan is dealing with a shrinking workforce and heavier reliance on AI-powered automation. In this world, Labors — the piloted machines that once represented the future of manual work — are now normalised, while autonomous robots are beginning to take over even that space.
That setup makes SV-2’s job feel very relevant in 2026. The unit is still responsible for stopping crimes involving Labors, but the battlefield has changed. Instead of shiny new tech, they are working with upgraded versions of the classic SV-98 Ingrams. Very old-school, but still dangerous when used properly.
The new AV-98Plus Ingram is basically the veteran machine getting a serious refit. The frame has been around for almost 40 years, and some officers apparently dismiss it as an old junker. But the “Ingram Plus” now comes with better mechanical performance, stronger software, and a pilot helmet with augmented reality projection for key information, working alongside the cockpit HUD.
The cast includes Sumire Uesaka as Towa Kuga, the 22-year-old pilot of Ingram-01, and Kikunosuke Toya as Kippei Atori, the 23-year-old commander of Ingram-01. Ami Koshimizu plays Saki Hirata, commander of Ingram-02, while Chikahiro Kobayashi voices Akihiko Hazama, its pilot. The line-up also features Setsuji Satō as Yūta Yanai, Yume Matsumura as Hachikuma Yuzuki, and Megumi Hayashibara as SV2 captain Kimika Saeki.
One very cool legacy detail: Shigeru Chiba is back as Shigeo Shiba, a role he has been connected to since the original Patlabor anime era nearly four decades ago. For fans who grew up with the franchise, that is the kind of continuity that actually matters.
Behind the scenes, Patlabor mechanical designer Yutaka Izubuchi is directing the anime at J.C. Staff. Kazunori Itō is writing the script, original creator Masami Yuuki is handling character designs, and Kenji Kawai returns for the music. HEADGEAR is credited with the original story, with GENCO producing and GAZEN handling CG production. Mori Calliope performs the opening song “Reimei Compass,” while Mariko Nagai performs the ending theme “Baton.”
The anime is planned as eight episodes released theatrically across three films. File 1 opened on May 15 with the first three episodes, File 2 follows on August 14 with episodes 4 to 6, and File 3 is planned for March 2027 with the final two-part story.
For Malaysia and SEA fans, the key thing to watch now is distribution. The announcement confirms the Japan theatrical schedule, but there is no specific Malaysia or regional cinema/streaming rollout mentioned yet. Still, Patlabor has the kind of grounded mecha-police angle that could land well with anime fans here who want something more tactical and less superhero-style than the usual giant robot spectacle.
Also, the timing is pretty interesting. A story about labour shortages, AI automation, and humans trying to stay useful beside machines? That hits differently now, even outside Japan. If EZY balances workplace sci-fi, police drama, and classic mecha tension properly, this could be one for the older anime crowd and newer tech-minded fans alike.
