Patlabor EZY is moving into its next case

The long-running Patlabor franchise is keeping busy, bro. The official site for the Patlabor EZY anime project has released a new teaser trailer for File 3, confirming that the compilation film will open on March 5.

File 3 is the third compilation movie for the project, and it brings together the anime’s seventh and eighth episodes. The site also revealed a new visual and announced two additional cast members. For collectors, the File 3 Blu-ray Disc is scheduled to ship on March 12.

That is not the only Patlabor update either. Good Smile Company also streamed a commercial for Patlabor the Case Files, a new 3D action game from Good Smile Company and developer Chime Corporation. The video confirms that the game is set to launch on September 17 for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam.

A future where mecha feels less sci-fi, more daily grind

Patlabor EZY shifts the setting to the 2030s, where Japan is dealing with labour shortages and heavier automation through AI. In this version of the world, Labors — the piloted work mecha that used to feel like next-level industrial tech — have become normal parts of society. But even these piloted machines are slowly being pushed aside by autonomous robots.

Still, SV-2 has the same core job: stopping crimes involving Labors. This time, the team operates with upgraded versions of the classic SV-98 Ingrams.

The updated machine, called the AV-98Plus Ingram, is basically an old legend with new parts. The Ingram frame has been around for almost 40 years, and some officers apparently call it an old piece of junk. But the Ingram Plus comes with a reinforced frame, improved mechanical systems, newer software, and a pilot helmet with augmented reality projection that feeds important information directly to the pilot. Very old-school mecha soul, but with modern UI vibes.

Returning DNA from the original Patlabor team

The announced cast includes Sumire Uesaka as Towa Kuga, Kikunosuke Toya as Kippei Atori, Ami Koshimizu as Saki Hirata, Chikahiro Kobayashi as Akihiko Hazama, Setsuji Satō as Yūta Yanai, Yume Matsumura as Hachikuma Yuzuki, and Megumi Hayashibara as SV2 captain Kimika Saeki.

A major nostalgic pull is Shigeru Chiba, who returns as Shigeo Shiba after playing the role since the original anime era nearly 40 years ago.

Behind the scenes, the project has serious Patlabor bloodline. Yutaka Izubuchi, the franchise’s mechanical designer, is directing at J.C. Staff. Kazunori Itō is writing the script, Masami Yuuki is handling character designs, and Kenji Kawai is composing the music. GENCO is producing, with GAZEN on CG production. The original story credit goes to HEADGEAR.

The theme songs are also set: Mori Calliope performs the opening song “Reimei Compass”, while Mariko Nagai performs the ending song “Baton.”

Why this matters for Malaysia and SEA anime fans

Analysis: Patlabor has always hit different from louder super-robot shows because it treats mecha like public infrastructure — police work, labour systems, bureaucracy, and tech slowly changing society. With AI automation and labour issues now feeling much less fictional, EZY’s 2030s setup could land harder for older anime fans and newer viewers who want sci-fi with actual social texture.

For SEA fans, the key thing to watch is not just the anime timeline, but the game angle. A PS5 and Steam release gives Patlabor the Case Files a clearer path to international attention than a Japan-only arcade-style drop would. No Malaysia-specific launch or availability details were stated in the source, so for now, consider September 17 the date to keep on your radar.
