Sanrio is finally treating games like a proper lane, not just a side quest.

The company has announced Sanrio Games, its first official game brand, and the debut title is Sanrio Party Land. The game is planned for a worldwide launch this fall on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, which means Malaysia and the wider SEA region should not be left waiting behind Japan-only release windows.

For a brand built on Hello Kitty, My Melody, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll, Pompompurin, and a whole army of characters people already collect on bags, keychains, plushies, and phone cases, this move makes a lot of sense. Sanrio characters have always been huge in lifestyle and merch. Now Sanrio looks ready to push harder into playable experiences under one dedicated gaming label.

What is Sanrio Party Land?

Based on the announcement, Sanrio Party Land is set in a town filled with Sanrio characters. Players will be able to create their own avatars, then jump into mini-games and board-game-style activities with different Sanrio favourites.

So yes, this sounds like the cute, cosy, party-game type of release that could sit somewhere between a family-friendly board game night and a character hangout. Not every Switch game needs to be sweaty ranked mode, bro. Sometimes you just want to roll dice, customise an avatar, and vibe with Kuromi.

Sanrio has also released a concept video for Sanrio Games, giving fans the first look at the direction of the new brand.

Why SEA fans should care

For Malaysian players, this is interesting for a few reasons.

First, the worldwide release plan matters. A lot of character-driven Japanese games can be messy for SEA fans, especially when releases are region-limited, delayed, or buried behind language/platform issues. If Sanrio Party Land really lands globally at the same time, it should be much easier for local Switch owners to jump in without waiting months.

Second, the platform choice is smart. The Nintendo Switch is already a strong family and casual gaming machine here, especially for games like Mario Party, Animal Crossing, and other titles that work well in living rooms, dorms, and casual hangouts. A Sanrio party game could hit that same crowd: couples, siblings, younger players, collectors, and anime/ACG fans who want something chill between bigger releases.

Third, launching on both Switch and Switch 2 gives the game a wider runway. Existing Switch players will not be forced to upgrade immediately, while early Switch 2 adopters still get support. For Malaysia, where console upgrades can be very price-sensitive depending on local stock and import pricing, cross-gen support is a practical move.

Sanrio Games has bigger plans

Sanrio Party Land is only the start. Sanrio Games is also scheduled to release a second game within the current fiscal year. Beyond that, the company is aiming for roughly 10 titles over the next three years.

That is a pretty serious pipeline. It suggests Sanrio does not want this to be a one-off party game experiment. The company also plans to explore creating new IP that begins from games, which is especially interesting. Instead of only turning existing characters into games, Sanrio may use games as a place to build new characters and worlds from scratch.

If that works, we could see Sanrio become a more active player in the cosy, casual, character-game space. And honestly, the timing is good. Cosy games, avatar customisation, social play, and cute character branding are all very alive right now.

For now, Sanrio Party Land looks like one to watch if you own a Switch, plan to get a Switch 2, or just have a soft spot for Sanrio characters. Not every announcement needs to be gila blockbuster-level to be worth paying attention to. Sometimes, a cute party game with proper worldwide support is exactly the kind of thing that finds a big audience quietly.
